Transfering files/applications?

Is it possible to store applications on the ipod? For example can I store my collection of movies or video games on the ipod to save space on a labtop? If so, how do you do it?

I have tried running softwares straight from the iPod itself.. some worked and some didn't. i think certain softwares require installation.. but some just drag and drop. (this only works for macs though).
