No.

If you have a Windows PC, like myself, I suggest getting the USB/Firewire cable. This way you can have blazingly fast transfers via the USB 2 connector and at the same time you can charge your iPod through the AC adapter/Firewire end of the USB/Firewire cable even while your PC is off.

Or just use the flippin firewire cable and put the AC adapter away. :P

I'd like to dispell a myth I've been seeing a lot on these forums lately.

I've seen several people state that they can't charge their iPods using the firewire connecion because they run Windows. I run Windows, have my iPod connected to the PC using the supplied firewire cable, and it charges just fine.

Perhaps the people experiencing this problem should buy a different firewire adapter. I bought a generic $13 VIA 3-port firewire card at www.adamant.com that works great.

Both points are valid, but charging through the firewire cable while the computer is off can only be done by unplugging the firewire cable from the back of the computer and using the AC adapter. This can be a pain for some (myself included - computers under the desk or what have you) if they want to charge while thei iPod while the computer is off.

The myth unfortunately was started by Apple. :D

I leave my computer on; I heard somewhere it takes more power to boot up/down constantly then just leave it on and let it 'hibernate'. :o

Yep I charge my iPod through firewire all the time. Why would you turn off your computer by the way? (unless you have a laptop)

I read somewhere that charging your IPOD via the firewire means that the IPOD disk drive continoulsy spins creating extra wear and tear. Is this true? Also I will double check this but I think my firewire still charges my IPOD even when the PC is off. I know my digital still camera definitely gets a charge via the USB cable when the PC is off. Someone who KNOWS for sure please reply.

If you unmount the iPod, it will continue to charge without the disk spinning.

My firewire ports provide no power when the computer is off.

It works fine on my computer. Although the battery meter is now being odd, after updating the firmware.

USB cables can't charge - At most they can provide modest power to small devices - but not charge. Are you sure you are really charging your camera via USB? When your PC is OFF? Are you -really- sure?
Does your TV receive signals when it is turned off?

Some devices charge through USB. I have a <cough> Creative Nomad Zen <cough> <piece of $hit> that I am able to charge through the USB port. Of course to full charge it it took about 8 freakin' hours!

so if you use the dock to charge(connecting the firewire cable to the ac adapter then plugging into a power outlet, and then mounting the ipod on the dock with the pc off) the harddisk on the ipod is still spinning?

or is this only when you connect it to the firewire port when the pc is on?

can someone please clarify?

If you use the dock to charge, the HD on the iPod does NOT spin, unless of course you are listening to it.

You can also connect the iPod to a Mac (don't know about a PC) and have it charge without the HD spinning. To do this just unmount the iPod as was mentioned before.

That is what I have experienced at least.

sounds like its only when the ipod is mounted

on another note, i want to see someone disconnect the powerlines inside of dock and mount a plug to the back to plug in an inverter, this would cost a minimal ammount (plug ~$1 adapter ~$5) and one would have the ability to charge the ipod whenever they wanted
