# 2 Re: Disadvantages of iPod?
Disadvantages (3rd Gen Only)

1. Battery Life
2. No support for other DRM formats available on digital service outside of iTunes
3. no LCD remote

None of the above three points come close to making it a "no buy" though.

Buy it!

BTW - This thread is going to get shot right over to the "poll" forums as soon as a Mod stops by. Just for future reference all Poll threads have a home in that area.

One large drawback for me: the touch-sensitive buttons on the 3G models. Accidentally hitting them is very common and disconcerting.

i never accidently push buttons... but if some idiot are with you they just have to wipe their hand on it quickly to mess things up

This is true.
I will say that I absolutely use the Hold switch much more often on my 3rd Gen then I do on my 2nd Gen for just this reason.

These buttons certainly are touch-sensitive with the emphasis on sensitive.

what about that circle on iPod is it wheel which you rotate or not?
dimmdesign at 2007-11-15 14:17:39 >
# 7 Re: Disadvantages of iPod?
It's too freakin' cool. Is that a drawback? No?

Then I'd have to go with the battery. If it could last at least 12 hours it would be the most awesome thing in the planet. SInce Gen 3 goes upto 8 hours, on a good day, with minimal fiddling, and no bells and whistles, at least its still the most awesome mp3 player out there.

It's not actually a wheel - it doesn't move at all. Remember old rotary telephones, the ones you actually dialed by spinning the circular control? You use this the same way, only the dial is pressure sensitive (it doesn't really move).

Battery life. I'm at 6 hours on an a full charge. 8-10 would be nice.

Scratches. This baby gets nicked up very easy. I now learned to buy my case/skin of choice right away so after I open it I can put it in right away. I waited 3 days and I wish I hadn't.

Other than that, not much to gripe about with an ipod.

i actually have alittle pet peeve. the ipod is too wide. if it were alittle more skinny, it would be the perfect player. there really arent any disadvantages at all. battery life is not a problem at all for me and with a skin, its well protected.

# 11 Re: Disadvantages of iPod?
I love mine except i wish it was more durable. SO it could stand a little fall without totally messing up. Like as durable as a cd player.

# 12 Re: Disadvantages of iPod?
iPod looks great but scratches keep showing up everywhere. Smudges easily and it's so nice and delicate I almost dont want to use it!

Battery life could be better but I would never consider for a second owning a different portable audio device.

# 13 Re: Disadvantages of iPod?
I love my iPod, and dont think a better AAC player (or mp3) is available today.

Some things I would like to see added:

OGG
Longer Battery, or faster charge times
Scratch resistant screen/back
Dock/Remote with 10gb model

Other then that, it is sweet, and I am sure all of these will be added in the future!

Too wide? Really? I mean I think saying that something that really is the size of two jewel cases yet holds a few thousand songs is pretty #### impressive. People who smoke (I am not one of them) carry packs of cigarettes which are much thicker and wider than a 'Pod.

Size has to be one of the few things in which complaints are for the most part unwarranted.

Get a Gen 2, then!

Good thread, however the poll is going to be a biased poll. Since most people on here I think own an iPod.

# 17 Re: Disadvantages of iPod?
-battery life (i get 4-5 hours out of it at most. Be sure to have an ac adapter and car charger handy at all times)
-more quick functions (ie. quick buttons for Shuffle, Repeat, ID3 tag. Wastes precious battery life to have to go to the beginning of the menu every time you want to switch to Shuffle or repeat.)
-scratches VERY easily. This is probably my lowest pet-peeve.
-I wish I could tone down the backlight or make it brighter. It is very bright in my car at night.
-i've been having an issue with selecting songs lately. When I select a song it plays the next one in teh list. Weird.
-gap between tracks. As much as people think this can't be changed, due to the nature of mp3's, it can and I've seen it down all over the place. My archos got rid of gaps thanks to the hacked firmware.

as you can see, most of my peeves could be changed with a decent firmware upgrade.

Dimitris-

Look into buying a Gen 2 ipod.

They are much cheaper and offer most of the funtions of the 3gs. Plus the 2gs don't have the crappy buttons the 3gs do.

# 19 Re: Disadvantages of iPod?
People now looking for a MP3 jukebox should seriously take a look at the iRiver iHP 120. It's almost the size/weight of the iPod (and by almost I dont mean one inch bigger in each dimension, it's really the same size), has double the battery life and a crazy ammount of features (OGG, an internal mic, line in/out and naturally and internal MP3 decoder are just a few of them). The iPod only has it's looks and simplicity against all those. I'm yet to hear bad things about it, unlike with other competitors that all have their flaws (size, bad firmware, etc.).
Polaris at 2007-11-15 14:30:52 >
# 20 Re: Disadvantages of iPod?
Polaris: it's around 25% thicker actually. No problem though.
But it doesn't look as good. I wanted a Zen NX at first but then I spended almost $200 more on the iPod. Almost only because it's smaller size, bigger display and better looks. Same thing with iriver's player, too ugly :|

I love my iPod. Battery life isn't a concern for me, it almost never gets below 50% anyway.

But I don't like how easily it gets scratched :/
I used it with the normal case for almost two weeks before getting my iSkin, and I have a couple of scratches on the screen. One of them is quite big :/
And actually it had scratches from the beginning! Annoying.

They are _MINIMAL_ though, but in the right light they're easily spotted.

In the iSkin this doesn't matter that much though =)

I am also a fan of the iRiver. I am interested to see how the next generations of the iPod and the iRiver stack up a year from now.

At the moment my iPod and I are inseparable but I happen to like the iRiver brand and think they have done a good job with their player. Choc full of features if that is what you are looking for. Aesthetically the iPod still wins out but I would love for my 'Pod to have an AM/FM tuner and a backlit LCD remote and the iRiver has both of those.

# 22 Re: Disadvantages of iPod?
Erty, lets look at the facts. The iPod measures 61 x 104 x 15.8 mm, and the iHP 120 measures 60 x 105 x19 mm. They weight 158 and 160 grams, respectively. iHP 120 weights 2 grams more, iPod is 1mm wider, iHP is 1mm longer. No biggy. iHP, however, is longer by dreadful 3 (3.2 if you insist) milimeters! You don't have to be a math wiz to know that's not 25%. Also, the iHP 120 definitely isn't ugly (https://secure5.nexternal.com/iriver/images/iHP120angle.jpg). It's no iPod, but it looks real nice IMO.

SpideyPod, I can't believe I forgot the remote/radio! :)

It's amazing how iRiver managed to cram this many features in a product the same size as the iPod.

# 23 Re: Disadvantages of iPod?
when i moved from my cd player to the ipod, all was good except for the lack of bass. 2.1 made it a lot better, but when comparing it to my cd player, it still lacks.
Fiddytree at 2007-11-15 14:35:01 >
# 24 Re: Disadvantages of iPod?
Fiddytree, are you using the EQ settings for bass?

The iRiver iHP 120 is a very attractive package. The player itself is not as beautiful as an iPod, but looks are just one part of the package (as anyone who's been on a date can attest to).
dcx693 at 2007-11-15 14:36:01 >
# 25 Re: Disadvantages of iPod?
Oops, I thought it was 21 mm.

Anyway, it IS ugly IMO. But that's just my personal opinion :)
And the interface is way too messy, doesn't look good at all.

It still sure is a good player packed with nice features. But I wouldn't buy it.

# 26 Re: Disadvantages of iPod?
i am ...i pick between Hip Hop and Rock . Hip Hop makes the base closer to my cd player. Rock actually makes, well, rock sound better (excluding the bass).

# 27 Re: Disadvantages of iPod?
no i can't buy iRiver, cause I don't like the company!!!!!

Well today I went to Robert Sayle here in Cambridge and they had only in stock the 10 and 40 gb ( I want the 20Gb), I play around with iPod 40Gb and i can say I am more addict to this little white thing!!!! It is adorable like my girlfriend a little less than my girlfriend!!!!!

Yes it is.
If you like that iHP thing so much just get it. But I don't think you'll get much support on an iPod discussion site like this! :D

# 29 Re: Disadvantages of iPod?
Geez, accept that the iPod isn't the only MP3 player in the world already.

iRiver make good MP3 players, #### good, probably even better in technical features. I am going to get the iPod for its style, and size, nothing else.
Adam at 2007-11-15 14:41:02 >
# 30 Re: Disadvantages of iPod?
Exactly. I was about to say the same thing. You people act as if anything other than the iPod sucks. It's a good player -- hell, a really good player -- but the competition is getting closer and closer, and the iPod, by technical features unfurtunatly stays behind.
The iPod is king when it comes down to looks and style, and it's completely alright to like it for that.

# 31 Re: Disadvantages of iPod?
well...
No question about it... I am getting an iPod on Monday, well I will order it on Monday hopefully... but it gets 10-15 days just to dispatch and then 3-5 days to come!!! F**** that 2 weeks ... I want my iPod on Monday... not after 2 weeks

# 32 Re: Disadvantages of iPod?
HOW MANY features do you want in a MP3-PLAYER? Do you want it to make coffee too?
The iPod (and most of it's competitors) has ALL the features an mp3player should have (IMO of course). So size, looks, ease of use (incl. file transfer), hd-size, sound-quality and price are the most important aspects when buying a mp3-player. And the iPod wins in EVERY category! I don't care if the iPiver can record from a stereo or whatever, I wouldn't use that, it's alot easier to rip and transfer.

:)
sparks9 at 2007-11-15 14:44:10 >
# 33 Re: Disadvantages of iPod?
sparks9 the iriver uses drag and drop AFAIK, even easier than iTunes ;)
iTunes is better anyway though.

Btw Polaris the old one was 21 mm :) And 3.2 mm on the new one is still 20% ;)
Erty at 2007-11-15 14:45:12 >
# 34 Re: Disadvantages of iPod?
1) Battery life sucks--I rip at 224-320, and I only get about 4-5 hrs of battery life (fortunately I listen to it mostly in the office, so I can keep it charged).

2) The EQ is terrible. It distorts a lot recordings. It would be great if I could import my own settings. Really, the EQ distortion is unacceptable for this level of player. Somebody at Apple really screwed up.

Other than that, I love the ipod, although I have trouble recommending it for the above two reasons.

# 35 Re: Disadvantages of iPod?
ok many people says battery sucks.

When i bought my iBook Apple said that the battery has 6 hours battery well the most I got once it was 3:40....

4-5 hours that fair enough for me, I guess. :(

The EQ can be changed in the next updates of iPod software, I guess (again)...

I am "about" to buy it...

I just have to click the checkout button at apple's site...
