firmware needs
I think the ipod needs some way to add songs to its database itself.
ex. i grab some mp3's over at a friends house but they're just dumped on my ipod's disk. the iPod should be able to check its disk for music files and allow you to add them to a playlist of some kind.
Then i could rip DI straight to my iPod =]

If your friend is using iTunes then it's simple. Just plug in the pod and then use iTunes' preferences to set it to manually manage songs. Then you can drag songs right into your iPod's library.
You'll need to use third party software to get those songs back off your pod when you get home though. Otherwise iTunes (if that's what you're using) will delete them the next time it syncs up your library.
