"Charged".... yet battery bar shows only 1?

I just updated to 2.1 and transferred some songs. The battery was nearly empty after transferring, so I charged. It was surprisingly short for charging but it the battery bar only shows 1. Why is this?

Just updated to 2.1, and I get this too. iPod claims it's finished charging yet the battery meter is anything but full.

Interestingly, if I remove iPod from the dock, then re-insert it, wait a few minutes and disconnect again, the meter still isn't full, but it displays a different 'non-full' level.

Looks like a bug with the firmware to me, as I suspect the battery is in fact full (charging circuits surely can't be controlled by the main firmware?)

Full or not, this is an irritation since it means the battery meter is completely useless!!

Anyone have any tips?

Giles.

try doing a soft reset (menu + play). Mine only went up to 3/4, now it goes all the way.

Mine was only showing 2/3 full after charging it overnight and i just did a reset (menu and play) and now it shows full. It must be a little bug in the new firmware.

My brothers iPod is doing the same thing and when he tries to reset it it shows a different battery level every time. It is charged but never shows that it is fully charged.

Eeeek! I've been suffering from the same battery meter problem. Just did a soft reset and my battery meter went from showing 3/4 full to (after reboot) only 1/4.

Hmmm. Maybe time to go back to the previous firmware...

Mine too.
After it's fully charged the battery icon will be 2/3rds full.
I then let it sit for a while (hour or so) and when I turn it back on the battery meter is usually then full. It seems to take a long time for the meter to properly update itself.

Is this just a meter problem? Does the player actually die sooner than 7 to 8 hours of use as well?

I've noticed the same problem on 2.1 with my Ipod as well. The meter shows about 3/4 full after the unit "Claims" that it's fully charged. I'm running the Ipod playing all night and seeing how much battery life I get from it.

I'm going on 4 hours of playtime and the battery meter is showing a tiny bit of juice left in the unit already! If it dies at 4 hours i'm going to be really angry!

I've found that after using my iPod over the weekend, and hence removing and re-inserting it into the dock, the charge meter seems to have sorted itself out.

And I think it's fairly safe to assume that if the iPod says it's charged, it will be (despite the meter reading otherwise).

I used my iPod for about an hour, and the meter went down by about 20%. Which I've found is about usual. (oh, the days of better battery life are sorely awaited..)

I'm having this problem, too. I'll have to see how long the battery lasts. It's very disconcerting to grab the iPod on my way out the door to see that's it's only 20% charged.

Same here! I recharged it today after dunning it down to almost zero, and when i pulled it out of the dock it said it was TOTALLY empty. Then i watched as it slowly started filling up right before my eyes. Reset it and now it is up to 3/4 full. I'm relieved that it is (probably) firmware but a bit dissapointed. especially with the "ok to disco" problem

Im having a similar problem except a lil bit different. With mine, I will charge it, and take it off dock before going to bed. Leave it of a dock jus sitting somewhere overnight(w/ hold button).

When i wake up in the morning to listen...battery is practically all the way empty...

I have 1.2 also. ANY SUGGESTIONS? IS THIS A SCREWY IPOD OR SCREWEY FIRMWARE?

Thanks:D

I'm having the same problem.

Except I left my iPod to charge last night and this morning I put it in my bag and when I went to play it in the afternoon it was dead?

Forget it, I need to revert back to 2.0.1 Do you have to restore in order to do that?

Can iTunes be used with the 2.0.1 firmware?

I installed iTunes with 2.0.1 and I couldn't get it to work. It would recognize the iPod but it was showing that it only had 4GB capacity and if I transferred songs over they never showed up on the iPod.

I deleted iTunes, havn't tried now that I've updated to 2.1.0.

I also have this problem, after about 20 minutes - 2 hours it shows it is charged, but disconnecting it and plugging it in again (I have a 10gb, no dock) continues to fully charge it.

I only got 5.75 hours of playtime off a full charge... seems a lil shady.

i too get a 2/3rds battery meter after charging but i noticed that if i leave it for a couple of minutes the battery meter increases up to full (you can actually watch it increase!).

I am getting this same problem.

menu + play = a soft reset?

I guess this only offers a temporary solution?

Does a soft reset wipe my ipod?

If you're referring to the MENU+PLAY button reset method, no it won't wipe everything off.

Ok, I shall give that a try...

Will this fix the problem in the long term? Or do i have to soft reset after every charge in order to show Full Battery on the indicator?

Thanks for your help

As far as i'm aware, doing a reboot after you undock or charge gives you more stable performance, i've heard the gauge will still read improperly.. Something us 3rd gen people have to deal with until they fix the issue.

I find the new Ipod 2.1 software more accurately reflects rechargable battery behavior. Not that this is good or right, just more accurate.

For instance, charging a lithium battery to 100% should say 100% in the display and last give or take 8 hours. But after an hour of usage, it might say half full/empty. This would be normal since the typical rechargeable battery plateaus for a while around the 66% point for the duration of the charge (6 hours or so) and then rapidlly dies out.

The software takes readings during load and stress and then averages it out, which is why you may see it rise during usage, or a dip right after removing it from the charger.

Once rechargeables reach that plateau its difficult to accurately detect the amount of time left. An example would be when the disk drive does a seek, the battery software would measure the dip in voltage and do an "Assumption" of whats left. But then it may rise as the song gets cached and no disk activity happens.

You should cold boot the ipod (Menu + Play) every once in a while to clear out memory bugs and reset counters.

The Lithium battery should also be amune to "Battery Memory" but I find running the ipod down to near minimum and then fully charging it with the charger also works good to condition the battery. But I don't recommend doing this too often.

I wouldn't be surprized if Apple rewrites the battery software again, and turns down the sampling rate, so the battery doesn't fluctuate so much. Seems like a lot of people are freaked over this.

Why? Is this not good for the battery?

Whoa, just did a soft reset to my 3G and the battery meter went down from 2/3 to 1/3 full??!!
I think i'm gonna regress to 2.0.1 for the time being.

Blue maffu,

Doing a complete discharge you potentially run the risk of deep discharging the battery to the point it will not accept any charge.

Technically what a battery does is move positive charged particles to the section of the battery that has a lack of positive particles, causing current flow. Utilmately what it wants to do is stablize the electric charge across the whole medium.

Running a deep discharge comes close to doing just that. Once accomplished, the battery refuses to take on a charge. Or to be more accurate the medium resists the reverse flow of particles because the charger is not pumping a strong enough current to it.

I personally have revived rechargable batteries (Not iPod batteries) from deep discharge state but it I had to arc a large current through the battery, looking like welding arcs, to get the resistant particles to move back to their mediums, and then all was fine.

If you run the batteries down all the way, just be sure you are listening to the iPod or paying attention to it. You wouldn't want to leave the iPod playing by itself, have it stop due to low battery and then leave it alone too long.

So to answer your question ... Running the batteries low and then fully charging them works the batteries and usually removes any weird "Memory" states it might have. Its not a bad thing, you just don't want to deep discharge it, and you don't want your batteries to work so hard all the time. What the point of deep discharge is, I don't know, but I try not to get too close.

The battery is good for 500 or so full discharges/recharges (that is what I have read on this board) so if you don't completely discharge it is better for the battery.
