Important Info for Refurbished IPOD Owners

Hey guys,

I thought I'd tell you about this since some of you probably bought refurbished Ipods and may have this same issue. Here goes:

Ordered Refurb Ipod 9/17
Shipped 9/25 after two delays, arrived 9/26

I had a problem syncing my ipod w/ my PC and called apple, gave them the serial number on the back of the ipod. The representative told me that the only info he had for the IPOD was a sale on May 19 and in fact there was no record of my transaction. He said that under normal circumstances they would have to charge me for service but he'd give me a break.

He then gave me a fax number to send my receipt to and ask for a valid purchase date so that I'd be able to exercise my warranty.

What I'm suggesting to you folks that bought refurbs is to check that apple has a valid purchase date for you so you don't end up w/o a warranty or an expired one if anything goes wrong.

I'd love to know if anybody has experienced this issue other than me.

CM

That's cool then - I really hope not many people have this problem. I spoke to the tech folks again and while he was reluctant to admit that this may have happened more than once he did mention that the highest chance of this anomaly occuring would have been during the big rush on refurbs, particularly the 15GB when they had to be shipping them out really quickly after they got them.

Yes, no problem here, either. In fact Apple's recorded purchase date was after I received the pod. In any event, when you order one, they (Apple UK) usually tell you to keep their confirmation e-mail as a receipt/guarantee.

On 9/26 I purchased a refurb iPod 10gb. I'm not as happy with this one. First off there are lots of scratches on the back panel. See pic below.

After charging the thing, I discover the battery appears to be DOA. I've tried everything recommended on the Apple Support site. Called Apple today, they say I have to wait for the order to show up in their system before they can proceed with an exchange. I had to fax them a copy of the invoice from the Apple Online store, they said to call back in 2-3 days. I'm not too cheery right now.

I think scratches are acceptable (at least on the back which seems susceptible enough to scratch when removing from the box).
But a DOA battery is a bit harder to swallow. It?s tough to hear a company tell you to "call back in 2 or 3 days".

I wouldn?t be too happy either.

But that is the pitfalls of customer service. The same company can bend over backwards to accommodate to a customers every whim while the next caller can speak to rep who wants nothing more than to get you off the other end of the line. Unfortunately that?s a fact of life.

Good luck, hopefully they are quick to respond and ship you out a new one soon.

No, that is absolutely shoddy. You need to speak to someone senior and tell them that you had been a massive admirer and supporter of the iPod and especially the great value offered by refurbs. Make it clear that you fully understand the limitations, but that you think that a DOA battery is completely unsatisfactory. You're giving him a chance to respond before you write the case up in a letter to MacAddict and before highlighting the problem on iPodlounge.

Moreover, if this is an unusual, unrepresentative and atypical occurence, then their response should prove it by being fast and efficient and caring.

Just thought I'd chime in on this topic -- first time IPOD owner here, purchased a 10gb refurbished model on 9/26 and got it via FedEx about a week later! Pretty quick turnaround despite a shipping flub that pushed back delivery two days.

There were a couple scratches on the back, but nothing I can't live with -- it's still basically new as far as I'm concerned, and this player beats the pants off of the last mp3 player I owned (Creative Labs Nomad Juxebox, 1st gen.)

And for $169, I couldn't beat the price. I know Apple gets away with charging a lot more since they know they still have one of the most superior products on the market, but at that price I just couldn't pass it up and I'm really glad I didn't now...

got my 2G 20gb yesterday.. in PERFECT condition.. Everything was sealed including the ipod. i can't tell if this one has been used before.. there are some minor circle scratches on the back, but i figure those just happen no matter what.

totally happy (unless it explodes in the next 3 months)
