Stunning void in the market....

Is there any info/rumors etc. regarding an ACTUAL in-car solution, i.e. a car stereo that has a built in dock for the iPod? It seems unbelievable with the iPod's popularity that no car stereo manufacturers are putting out these products. It would be like selling umbrellas in a rainstorm! I'd personally pay whatever ridiculous price they asked just to get rid of wires and tape adapters!

The closest I've seen is VW's "Phatbox" option, which is essentially a trunk mounted harddrive (20g i believe) with a removeable cartridge, that is controlled by the stereo's head unit.
Then you pop the cartridge out, and dock it to your computer to synch.

Well, at least some car stereo manufacturers are realizing that just putting an line in jack on the front of their units makes care listen for anyone with a portable player. Perhaps even they can see that the days of the CD are numbered.

very frustrating...
in the interim, has anyone looked at having an after-market 3.5mm auxiliary input jack installed on the faceplate (or elsewhere) of their existing car stereo...I have a 2003 Passat with Monsoon sound and would love to get an aux input jack installed so that I can just plug my iPod in and groove down the highway without the FM transmitter, wires, etc
