Color Screen?
Any projection on when we will see an Ipod with a color screen?
I just got a 10gb 3rd generation. I know it's the smallest but I'm holding out for the colored screen ones!
Last:)

That is laughable.
Firstly, colour screen = less battery life, something the iPod doesn't have much of already.
Mac exclusive? Surely limiting the most popular player on the market to several percent of computer users would be very counter-wise. There is no way in the world that it true.
Bluetooth? It would add bulk to the iPod, and be much slower than firewire, all for what, no cables?
But of course this would all be believeable to someone who advertises he's allegiance clearly in his sig.
As for the actual question, yeah, its a natural evolution that would surely have to come eventually. I don't see its usefullness, apart from the obvious of album art, but I would much rather have the name of the song than that. As for videos on the 'pod, the screen would have to be made larger to be able to actually view any videos, making the iPod bigger, a step backwards in my opinion, I will not buy an MP3 player that plays videos.

if you have looked at te second gen and the third gen the price dif iis huge for the lowest ipod on the market u were paying around (AUD) $750 that is because of the battery the battery life of the second gen was huge nearly double the 3rd gen. the reason they made the battery less good is not because of the size they were exactily the same (well off by a couple of cm) but it is because no-one was willing to pay that much money on a mp3 player for they were still new. the screen on an ipod is farely big in comparasin to other mp3 players (including the ones that play movies and previews pix. for example go to www.archos.com to see there mp3 player it is alot cheaper then the ipod and the only competitor tha apple should b afraid of). adding bluetooth wouldnt make it any bigger than it i s already is (well maybe just about 5mm) i have the idea u dont know what the hell ur talking about u ######.

Yeah, a color screen would be nice, but again, what would really be the point? Do you spend that much time looking at your screen that black and white is just irritating? Usually when you listen to music, at least for me anyway, I don't want to sit and look at my screen. Plus color would up the price at least $100 or so and in my opinion really isn't worth it.

# 5 Re: Color Screen?
Now there is talk about toshiba making hard drives even smaller(News page of ipodlounge), this would solve the battery life problem because it would be able to use a more compact battery, by the time 4th gens come out, they will be using the latest technology, so colour screens would be possible and maybe the battery life could also be better, I agree with Adam; if Apple only made the new ipods for Macs, that would just be stupid, because a lot of the previous owners of ipods are in fact Windows users, I personally cannot wait until news of a new ipod is released, but I do not like the idea of turning thye ipod into a PDA, it is an mp3 player and should stay that way!

The mac-only theory doesn't make any sense. They just released itunes for windows and now you're saying to hell with that and the bulk of the population that uses windows? Competition is growing in the hd based mp3 area with the ipod leading the way so why would they cut a huge revenue source like that
That leads me to question your other predictions.

Ralf, what are you smoking?
# 8 Re: Color Screen?
Why not color screen... although totally useless in usage but it attracts customers and puts an edge on ipod... gotta be different from other MP3 players...
just look at cellphones (handphone) why do u need color screen on cellphones anyways... but hey... those with color screen defintly sell better and are more appealing.. plus cost won't go up THAT much... but then again.. if u are worrying about cost u wouldn't be buying an MP3 player thats 300+ dollars

I will like the color screen to be able to save movies on my Ipod and then watch them on the plane and on the go.

The ipod would have to have a much larger screen for that to work. Not big enough.
And a colour screen is not necessary for an mp3 player. There is no colour in the name of the songs. THink about it this way. Shorter battery life to have coloured letters on a screen that you just use to select a song? If the battery was much improved next gen, then maybe, but i woulndt want it.
# 11 Re: Color Screen?
I laugh at people like Ralph, sources in Apple. If anything they are making the iPod MORE accessable to Windows users. Remember kids, don't believe everything you read.

# 12 Re: Color Screen?
sure a color screen is almost like the natural next step, but BLUETOOTH? C'mon! Speeds on bluetooth are lower than USB connections, it takes 2minutes to even transfer 1MB. Why would Apple revert to an inferior connection??
# 13 Re: Color Screen?
Hey ralf, I heard from an Apple source that those that hear from Apple sources are really just smokin' pot :)
# 14 Re: Color Screen?
I just don't understand it. I dont. Why does everyone think that Apple is going to discontinue making iPods for Windows? Why? Windows is the dominant platform, if anything (and I'm just being sarcastic here so don't get all edgy and defensive) they'd stop supporting Macs first because they make more MONEY supporting Windows. Why can't we just kill this rumor here? Every board I turn to is talking about the lack of support for Windows that there will be. THERE WILL BE SUPPORT FOR WINDOWS! THERE HAS TO BE OR ELSE APPLE WILL lose MONEY! Not a very smart business venture if you ask me.

# 15 Re: Color Screen?
What about WiFi instead of bluetooth? Look at the size of a WiFi PC card, take away the protective casing, and it won't enlarge the iPod by that much, and it features pretty fast transfer rates.
# 16 Re: Color Screen?
Why would apple want an I-Pod to play movies? If I anted a portable mp3/video player, I could get an archos 20gb for less money than the 3g 10gb i-pod,
THis wuold go against what apple is doing. The i-pod is appealing because it is sleek, cool, fun and SIMPLE. THAT is wahat made the I-pod king

i don't know but that thing from arcos looks really big and is really expensive. but it does play videos, take videos and the best one has an 80g hard drive. they are a worth competitor for the ipod, cept the price.

An 802.11b is still only 11 mb/s I still can't see the advantage over firewire.

# 19 Re: Color Screen?
why in the world would you want a color screen? so you can see text in color? that is stupid. and about the mac exclusive, HALF OF THE IPODDERS ARE WINDOWS USERS!!. mac would lose alot of $$. and i dont want that to happen. Because apple rules.
# 20 Re: Color Screen?
the next generation of ipods will have OLED color screens. these screens are great because they dont need a back light (real thin), just give it current and it lights up with a lot of clarity and brightness...my $0.02
