Keyboard
I think we can all agree it would be nice to be able to enter information on the iPod. So i made a rough sketch of how it could work. You would use the scrollwheel to cycle through the letters/numbers and "type" by tapping the select key. Holding the select key would type in uppercase instead of in lowercase. What do you think? :)

I totally agree on you with the inputing text on you ipod idea. I stated a post on that myself and you should be able to transfer that information to you PC/Mac.
# 2 Re: Keyboard
that would be nice I guess. It would be better if you could type it all on ephpod or itunes or whatever and then transfer them to your pod like:
Workout for the week of 11/3
# 3 Re: Keyboard
I agree; by the way that pic looks awesome, how did you do that, what it a photoshop job?
# 4 Re: Keyboard
Infamouschitlin: Yes, support for the calandar, contacts etc in iTunes would be nice for us windows users.
theipodking: Thanks. I just took a screenshot of one of the ipod pages on apple.com and added the keyboard part. Took 5 minutes, at the most. :)

Woah.....nice idea!! and way awesome pic!! and u better sell ur idea to apple.....one fellow ipodlounger mentioned how amazing it would be to have a card reader to transfer pictures to the iPod and now, there's one.....ha ha! so when u're rich and famous with ur pic on TIME, don't forget me!! ha ha....just kidding....
# 6 Re: Keyboard
Awesome :) Send it in to Apple.

A clip on thumboard might be better and certainly a lot quicker.
Its a great idea though. It starts to introduce more PDA functionality, which scares me because I don't want to clutter my iPod...

MikeM: Yes, a hardware solution would definatley be quicker, but with a software solution you wouldn't have to buy an addon.
Why not both tough? If you find the software one to slow/limiting you could buy the hardware one and use that instead.
If they add it, they should use it to improve on the iPods music abilities, not on more 'pda' stuff.
Some things a keyboard could be useful for:
- Creating/naming playlists.
- You could save your On-The-Go playlists on the iPod itself instead of in iTunes.
- You could name your pictures you've imported with the card reader.
- You could name your voice recordings.
- You could make smartplaylists on the iPod itself.
- You could search for songs/artists/albums/etc.
- You could edit tags.
- You could add/edit notes/contacs/dates.

I would not use a "Ouija" board interface...
# 10 Re: Keyboard
kinda related: i am using palm desktop and Palm2iPod to update calender and addresses on my ipod, but the developer of that cool app wrote me to say that he can't do update the software to do to-do lists and memos/notes cause he has the older model ipod that does not support this. can we either all pitch in and send him one, or come up with another solution? dunno about you, but if i could get memos and to-dos into my ipod, i would sell my clie in a heartbeat.
# 11 Re: Keyboard
how big do think are the chances apple introduces this feature in upcoming versions?
I would buy a 3G iPod if such a software keyboard would be available to edit notes/dates.

Guys, remeber, this is an iPod, an mp3 player (well, really, the mp3 player) not a PDA. Isn't the big draw to the iPod that it has all this room for people who LOVE MUSIC? Yeah, I agree that the text input would be cool to name playlists and things on the go, but let us not forget that as we add features memory is lost. Just saying that I think way too many electronics are trying to cross over to be too many things at once. (Same with singers and actresses/actors if you ask me.)

The last sentence ist true(this applies to many new devices).
BUT:
For the iPod it wouldn't mean change. This feature could be easily introduced in upcoming firmware-versions.
If you dont' need it, you dont have to bother. The additionally used Memory can IMHO be neglected.
I don't have a PDA, I don't need one and I don't want to carry one!
If I had an iPod, I would nearly always have it in the pocket.
If now somebody would tell me his phone number or an important date I would save it on the iPod and would't forget it(like now).
This is the only big feature I'm really missing right now.
@those who are interested:
What about sending Apple this suggestion?
I did it and I hope they care about.
# 14 Re: Keyboard
Chelce: I don't think the keyboard would require that much memory, and it would enhance the music experience since it would allow you to do stuff on the ipod itself instead of having to sync. I hope Apple will concentrate on adding/improving the firmware and not add more pda functions and games.
Jeffrey Goines: I did too, but i guess the more people who do, the better :)

# 15 Re: Keyboard
I like the idea of being able to edit Tags directly on the iPod and then sync those changes back up to my PC.
While around 50% of my collection is tagged 100% correctly the other 50% could use some tweaking. I most often do that when listing to music on my PC 5.1 setup, I will catch a song and check the info and maybe tweak the genre, check that album info is correct etc.. and make the appropriate changes.
Genre being my number one goal to get just right.
I realize the iPod does not display genre, year etc... BUT if this feature to edit was available maybe they could have the iPod read the entire tag and display in a separate screen so as to not clutter what is a nice simple interface at the moment.
I am sure with the newer models mostly like sporting 60 gig drives and up this won't be too far fetched of an idea.

It sounds like a good idea to me. It would be fun to type stuff directly into iPod, would definitely enhance the experience.
# 17 Re: Keyboard
The "Ouija" interface would be the best
1. No firmware updates
2. Keeps sleek look
3. DOES NOT give impression of the i-pod trying to combat pda's
# 18 Re: Keyboard
Ouija? What's that then?

Where You scroll thru the letters- no keyboard
