We forget the obvious
What is the one thing all iPod users suffer/complain about?
That right you guessed it, the bloody scratches!
They can make bullet proof plastics these days, so why can't they make a scratch resistant platic for the iPod. Ok stopping big gashes or potential knife wounf type things would be impossible, but the little scuffs can't be that hard to eliminate can they?
Apple you have to do something about this, its the one thing that has affected all iPod's that you haven't done anything about!

I am a material engineer and I don't know of a plastic that doesn't scratch. Bullet proof plastic is polycarbonate and it scratches like he**. The chrome backing makes the scratches really show up. My best advice to Apple would be to go with a rubberized backing (better grip?) or put a hard clearcoat over the chrome.

Surely some quenching would fix the problem, its not like the back has to be ductile in any way, it doesn't move.

I don't think quenching will help. I believe the back is chrome plated plastic, its only a very thin layer of chrome.

Everyone complains about the scratches, but I don't really see what the big deal is. If you buy a case, like an iSkin where it can be in the case almost all the time, it shouldn't really scratch or fingerprint. Buy a case, they're like $20.
