Shure e2 vs. Sony MDR-EX51SP

OK, I have been reading a ton on this board and on head-fi.org. I'm really interested in the Shure e2s, and I'm going to Guitar Center this weekend to check them out. However, I hear a number of negative things about them. For example, they completely cancel out all outside noise and this is not always good. Secondly, it is not convenient to keep putting them in and taking them out.

I was on Audiocubes.com and looked at the Sony MDR-EX51SP. It looks like a good in-ear phone, and looks like another good alternative. However, some people have a lot of bad things to say about the Sony models.

I would appreciate any advice that anyone can give me regarding these two models. Thanks.

Oh by the way, these are to be used with a 3G 20GB iPod with remote, so that is probably why I would get the shorter cord version for the Sony.

I haven;t worn my new e2's in a couple days and my ears still hurt!! I think its just a FIT problem form me. Even the smallest foamies are too big...

Excellent sound quality...just can;t stand wearing them...

I have the Sony MDR-EX51SP and they sound great. And as far as hearing negative things about them, if you search hard enough you can find negative things about anything!! Even my beloved iPod!

neosoul: Good point, stupid on my part to say that. I've read positive and negative on every headphone I've considered, so that shouldn't be an issue. I guess I was just thinking of a lot of negatives I've seen on another Sony model (I think it was the EX71).

markp99: That's what worries me about the Shures. Everything tells me that their sound quality is incredible but that the comfort is a potential problem.

There is also a price issue here. I don't mind paying for the Shures if they're worth it, but if the Sony will do the job for about 1/2 the cost, why not choose them.

Believe me the Sony ones will do the job. I tested quite a few headphones/earbuds before buying. I do computer support work and I use my iPod the majority of the time I am at work. I wear the headphones for hours on end with no discomfort at all. Sometimes I hardly remember I have them in. But the major point is that they sound really good.

I own both the EX's and the Shures...The Shure's blow the EX's (which now reside in my desk drawer) away. The EX's aren't bad, but the Shure's are DEFINITELY IMHO worth the extra money--the sound is significantly better, less muddled bass, clearer all in highs, lows, mids...

I went to custom ear molds. I'd check out both the EX's and the Shure's side by side--I though the EX's sounded great, until I tried the Shures...If comfort is an issue, the EX's are ok (they isolate quite a bit too BTW, although not as much as the Shure's), but if the Shure's are comfortable for you, I'd definitely go for them...
