File Converter

Hey everyone,

I have sort of an interesting problem. My music situation is this:

I do not have many CDs, as I find them too expensive, and before this have downloaded all my music from KaZaA. Now that using KaZaA can get you sued, I have developed a new way of getting music. I have the Rhapsody music service, which costs 10 dollars a month for the unlimited streaming of a ton of good music. Then I bought a 12 dollar program that can record streamed music into WAV files, so I can now save the Rhapsody music files on my computer, which they are not meant to be. In other words, I get my music semi-legally. I want to know what file format I should think about converting my music to, and what sort of program I would use to do it. Right now I convert my WAVs to 192KB MP3s using MusicMatch Jukebox's converter. I would have liked to download iTunes to convert to AAC, but as soon as I installed it, the program took over my iPod, and I couldnt use MMJB to use my iPod with. I know most people prefer iTunes, but I don't, so please dont degrade me for it. Are there any other programs that can convert to AAC, or is there a way to still use MMJB with my iPod and use iTunes just to convert? What file format should I use, and what program should I use to convert?

Thanks in advance,
Alex

First of all, the streaming music that you are ripping (is that the right term?) from raphsody is most likely not very high quality, so it is not worth it to encode any higher than *maybe* 192kps. I use the MPEG SUITE found here: http://ec2000.xperiment.net/download.php?filename=MPEGSuite
to convert to mp3's which is pretty good, and it supports many different mp3 codecs.

Thanks breakaway1029,

Surprisingly, the music from Rhapsody is in fact "CD quality." I know that this is a very objective term, as people continually quote 128KBS as CD quality, although actual CD quality is much, much higher. While not an audiophile, I am a fair judge of sound, and I find the music from Rhapsody to be very high quality. Therefore, I record to WAV for a lossless codec, then encode to whatever from there. Thanks again to breakaway1029 and to future posters.

Thanks,
Alex
