Best bitrate for standard headphones?

I will be buying a 10gb iPod later this year, and will be encoding my files in LAME.
Because I have heared some negative reviews of the iPod earphones, what is the best bitrate to use?

Welcome to the Lounge :)

I recommend --alt-preset standard, which produces MP3s at ~200k. That said, there's loads of discussion over in the Digital Audio Formats forum - read some of that, and you might decide that AAC or a different bitrate of MP3 is best for you. It does depend on how much you need to squeeze onto your iPod at once, and on how much hard drive space you have on your PC. Enjoy the ripping!

PS. You may also want to think about storing your rips in a lossless format, for long term use. Again, check Digital Audio Formats for more info!

Try -alt-preset medium and -alt-preset standard and blind-test to see if you can tell the difference. I also like -alt-preset 160 and -alt-preset 192 because they are still VBR files but try and get to an average bit rate of the number. Good because you can accurately see how much your gonna be able to fit on your pod.

I do -alt-preset standard for my fav albums and -alt-preset 160 for other stuff. Its up to your ears tho really.

Apple phones: use 128 CBR.
They're crap anyways, so 192 VBR wont sound any better.

I disagree "stasyna", I use standard apple buds and I can easily tell the difference between bitrate 128 & 192, but it really depends what YOU are like because everyones ears are different. I found it was best to change the same song to 192 and keep the original at 128 then listen to them both to see if I could tell any difference between them, then delete one!
