Archiving in AAC vs. MP3?
I just downloaded iTunes Windows the other day as soon as it came out, and promptly began ripping all my CDs into AAC and converting my existing MP3s. But now I am left w/ something of a dilemma. I will be getting an iPod soon, but I'd like to keep an archive of music on my computer rather than put everything on the iPod. As it stands, I have an MP3 and and AAC version of most of my music. I already know I'll load only AACs onto the iPod. Now, does it make more sense to stick with MP3 for the songs on my computer, or would AAC be better? Is there any way to convert AAC to MP3 in case I need to send a song to someone who doesn't use iTunes? I am somewhat hesitant to delete all my MP3s and leave only AACs on my HD. Any advice would be most appreciated.

I was told that there is degradation when converting from MP3 to AAC. How significant is this? Will this severely compromise the sound quality of my music?

lossless -> lossless is bad.
I'd stick with MP3 just to keep quality sound on the music file, but if you cant tell a difference, transcode away!

Don't convert it, the music will just degrade. If you really want AAC, then just re-rip it.

aac is a more advanced codec than mp3, so if you?ve decided to go the aac way (for the ipod) just stick with that format for your computer as well.
if you have fantastic harddrive space (maybe a huge external hdd), i?d recommend archiving your music as wav files, since wav is a lossless digital format (when ripping from a cd). unfortunately they?re huge. this way you can re-encode everytime a new format comes out with great ease.

Had the same dilema as you. Using Windows Media Center I need my music files in MP3 format so I ripped my cds using vbr lame. However as my ipod started to fill I found myself yearning for 128 ACC as it sounds fine when podding around. My solution- leave the mp3 files on my harddrive as is. AND also re-rip my cd's using itunes acc. I'm storing that copy on a blank dvd (they're cheap). Itunes ripper/encoder is so fast it hardly takes any time to do that extra step and you do get a lot of extra space on your ipod. Just a thought...
