WMA to MP3 (VBR 128kbps low 160kbps high)

Hi everyone, ok I'm new at this...just bought my 3g 40gb ipod.
K, now i Have lots of WMA files encoded at very high bit rate 300kbps and higher. Now I know ipod doesn't play wma files so I purchased Acoustica wave to mp3 converter (is there a better free one out there?). I guess my question is, what is the best setting to convert these files to mp3. I have already converted some files at VBR MPEG2 Layer3 128kbps low and 160kbps high. All the songs sound good but media player says that they are high bit rate (sometimes close to 340kbps). Will these play on the ipod? Any help and/or suggestions in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Please forgive me for spelling/grammar/tech errors!

Regards,
Yuri. :-)

Not sure about the VBR, I steer clear of it all together. I figure, if the CD's themselves that are an almost perfect copy of the original music don't have it, then I don't need it.
