Audible files will not play
I have a strange problem. I'm been using my 3G Ipod to listen to Audible books for a couple of months now. I've never had any problems. Audible Manager (AM) transfers the files correctly and they sound great.
I recently updated my Ipod to s/w 2.1 and I started using Itunes. I downloaded a new Audible file using IM. I transferred it to my Ipod using Itunes as the FAQ instructed. The file shows up on my Ipod just fine. When I go to play it, it doesn't do anything. I use the scroll wheel to select it and hit the center select button, but nothing happens. It doesn't start playing and it doesn;t give me any error message. All my older files on the Ipod work fine. I tried deleting an older file and reimporting it on to the Ipod. It won't play now either.
Anyone have any idea what is going on? I haven't been able to find any info on this on Audible's or Apple's websites.
Thanks,
Mike

To start with, make sure you have the latest iTunes for Windows.
4.1.1.54
If you do not have the update version, that is most likely the cause.
I think after you update your iTunes, you should reformat the iPod with the updater and reload everything.

# 2 Re: Audible files will not play
See my post from today.
I have the same problem and I don't even have iTUNES installed on my machine!
I too have a 3G and 2.1.
I am currently downloading a new copy of an audible file to see if the old ones are corrupt. I hope not as with my dial up connection they take ages to get.
When I reloaded the files they were added to the list so I now have twice as many. Audible Manager did not recognise the existing files as being on the iPOD though MC and Anapod see them OK.
I did have iTUNES installed but didn't like it so removed it.
Maybe iTUNES did something to the files on the PC and that is why when they are transferred they won't play.
I'll keep you posted.

I have now installed a fresh audible file and... same result. It doesn't play.
I have audible files of type 2 and 3 on the iPOD so it's probably not the file type.
I'm at a loss to know what to try next.

What version of MC9 are you using? This was a known bug with a couple of the last .2xx versions.

mindracing, just a suggestion.
it would be easier to help you if you stick with one thread or the other. You have parcels of the same discussion going in two different threads, so its difficult to follow you.

Did you change the id tags of the audible files?
The following is directly from audible's website:
"It is not recommended that customers change the ID tags of audible.com files. If you change the ID tags of your audible.com files in iTunes you will not be able to listen to them on the iPod."
Hope this helps!

I noticed this in iTunes Help:
I can't play spoken word content
If you see spoken word files in your library but can't play them, you may have exceeded the number of computers you're allowed to download Audible files to. Or you may be trying to listen to an Audible file that was downloaded using someone else's Audible account information, so you don't have access to the file.
Audible allows each account holder to download files on up to three different computers at a time. Once you've enabled your account on three computers (by dragging a file to iTunes and entering your Audible account information), you can't add Audible files to iTunes on a fourth computer until you disable your account on one of the first three computers. To disable an account, choose Advanced > Deauthorize Computer on the computer on which you no longer want to listen to your Audible files (the computer needs to be connected to the Internet). Then choose "Deauthorize Computer for Audible Account."
To see who downloaded an Audible file, select the file in the library and choose File > Get Info. The Owner field shows the user name for the Audible account holder who downloaded the file.

Mindracing, at least, is not using iTunes, and I change the id3 tags all of the time in MC9 and they play just fine.
Again, what version of MC9 are you using? We can't help if you don't give is all of the information.

10-4 on that Bill.
I can change the tags using iTunes or MC9 with no trouble.
Dordale- I think the recommenation from Audible not to change tags is aimed at preventing people who don't know what they're doing from creating a mess that they might not know how to fix.

parannoya--
You're probably right on that! I haven't tried to change the id tags on my audible files yet, but I do have iTunes on my pc at work, so I will try to experiment with changing the file name and report on my results.

# 11 Re: Audible files will not play
I spent ages yesterday attempting to resolve this. It now works fine.
According to Steve G (ipod plug in developer) it seems that the ipod database MC creates can be corrupted by using Audible Manager to transfer aa files to the ipod.
So the lesson for me is to use Audible Manager to download the file but transfer it using MC.
Thanks for your help.

Glad you got that worked out. And it brings up a good point for everyone.
Once you have installed iTunes or MC9 and use that to snyc / transfer files to your iPod, AudibleManager should be used only as the download manager. AM will not recognize files transfered with the other programs and vice versa.
The best thing you can do after installing iTunes / MC9, is to turn off or delete the AudibleManager plug-in for the iPod completely. It is no longer necessary, can potentially lead to conflicts, and it slows down AudibleManager significantly. In addition, you can use the entire window in AM to display files by eliminating the device pain.
To turn off the iPod Plug-In in AudibleManager.
1) Go to View Menu>Device Pain and toggle off the device pain window.
2) Go to device Menu,>Choose Moble Device. Set your device to none.
This will clean up the AM display window, and the program will load twice as fast, as it no longer has to try to connect to a device.
