Importing .aa files

I have a 10G Windows based IPOD. I just converted to iTunes. I'm having trouble importing .aa (audible.com) files to my IPOD. When I click on Import the only file choices I get are text, m3u, and XML. So nothing shows up. What am I doing wrong?

When you say you're having trouble importing them to your iPod, I think you mean you are having trouble importing them into iTunes. Is that right?

First, you must know which folder you're Audible files are located in. If you don't look in AudibleManager, under Tools Menu, select Location of Audible files. A box will open and it will show you where your Audible files are stored. That is the folder you will need to import into iTunes.

Then in iTunes, either choose Import folder and import the entire folder (easiest) or select Import file and find the particular file you want. Make sure you set the dialog box to "All files" where it says "files of type".

Another way is to open AudibleManager and iTunes and downsize the windows so you can see both on your screen. Then just drag the file from AM across to the iTunes libary.

Once the file is successfully imported into iTunes, you can transfer it to the iPod just like transferring any files with iTunes.

Yes your right about importing into iTunes. When I click on Import in iTunes, at the bottom where you have a choice of what kind of file you want to import, the only choices I get are text, m3u and xml.

I tried drag and drop from the file directly from the file directory and from audible manager and all I get is the universal symbol for "NO YOU CAN't DO THAT".

Aha! I think I see what's going on here.

In iTunes, go to file menu, select "Add File to libary, or Add folder to library" I think you are selecting the Import option.

Most Windows programs do use the "import" term for this task but in iTunes, its just "Add file to library" instead of import.

Then for those of us just now learning iTunes, how do you do this and how do we make sure the files end up under the Audible menu on iPod? (I am guessing that some people are loading in as music files and not getting bookmarks when they stop listening.

Help, please.

The ipod knows the difference between music and Audible files automatically.

If you are still learning iTunes, check the link to the iTunes support tutorial. I put the link in the Audible User's Guide.

But to help you find your Audible files on the iPod, you can creat an Audible playlist for your iPod. Once I've imported Audible files, I enter "Audible" as the album name, and whatever Audible files on my iPod are neatly grouped under this album title.

Detailed Instructions on Transferring files from Audible Manager to iTunes For Windows!

Thanks to parannoya and all the other patient and experienced iPoders. While it is now intuitive to me the instructions to ?transfer audible files to iTunes was not sufficient instruction? and after two days of plodding (slow newbie here) I figured out how to do it and have written out my experience. Any corrections, edits, or suggestions would be appreciated.

Parannoya?s refers to the iPod tutorial Be sure to look at it and be sure to look at the ?movies? there ? shows screens and points out exactly where to click.

There are several ways to transfer an audible.com book from Audible Manager: (After downloading from ?my library? at Audible.com to Audible Manager):

Detailed Instructions on Transferring files from Audible Manager to iTunes

? Open a widows explorer window and click on start/All ProgramFiles/Audible (or in your web browser type in: C:\Program Files\Audible) and click on go.
? Either of the methods above will take you to a browser window with several folders. Your target is the Audible Programs Folder which contains all your books.
? Open iTunes and click on Library icon in the lower left hand window
? If you want to transfer all the audible books you have on your computer to iTunes:
o Highlight the Programs folder in the browser window and either right or left click drag the Programs folder to the Library icon in the lower left pane or to a blank spot of the listing of files in the lower right hand pane.
? If you want to transfer only some of your audible books to iTunes, click on Programs and you will see all your audible book files:
o Highlight the book(s) you want to transfer (To highlight and move multiple books (files) hold down control as you highlight.) Right or left click drag the highlighted books and drop them on the Library icon in the lower left pane or to a blank spot of the listing of files in the lower right hand pane.

Alternatively you can use the iTunes File/Add Folder[File]:

Just open iTunes, click on File, then Add Folder or Add File, browse to ProgramFiles/Audible/Programs/Downloads/Individual Books if going that far down, and click open and then will transfer.

To transfer audible books from iTunes to iPod

Open iTunes with iPod attached by firewire or attach by firewire after opening iTunes. (Spend the $30 or so to buy a pc firewire card so that you will not spend all day transferring audible files to iPod on USB).

? Click on the Browse ?eye? icon on upper right of widow.
? Click on ?Spoken Word? in the Genre list that appears in the middle of the widow after you click Browse.
? Click on Library in upper part of left window and you will see any audible books that are in iTunes. If there are none there, repeat the instructions above for transferring audio files from Audible Manager to iTunes.
? Create playlists, if you want, of audible books:
o Click on iPod icon to create a playlist on iPod
o Click on ?+? in lower left corner
o Type in name of Playlist, ie, ?Audible Not Read,? ?Audible Children?s Books?, ?Audible X,? etc.
o Highlight and drag audible books individually from the ?Song Name? list
o Drop on the iPod icon on left if you want it on iPod, but not in a play list
o Drop on the Playlist under the iPod icon if you want in a playlist
o Multiple books can be dragged at once by holding control button down while left clicking the individual ?songs? (books) and once several are highlighted, release control and left click drag and drop the books onto the iPod icon or onto a playlist name that you have created. You are not taking up more space if you have a book in more than one playlist and in the ?Audible? menu list on the iPod. Playlists are merely tags.
o If you want to drag and drop the entire list of Audible books, highlight the first ?song? (book), hold shift key down while scrolling to bottom of the list of songs/books and while left clicking on the last song/book in the list, and, presto, all of the list will be highlighted. Left click on the highlighted list and drag it to drop on iPod icon or Playlist name on the left of window.
? I have not figured out how to create a playlist in iTunes and drag it to iPod. Anyone? Let me know and I will edit it or any other items in.

Label All Audible Files as an "Audible" Album:

So that all your audible files show up when you go to the Audible entry on the iPod menu, you should label all audible files as an Audible album:

? Open iTunes, click on Library icon in upper left window
? Click on Browser eye
? Click on Spoken Work in Genre column
? Click cursor into album space of audible book
? Type in Audible
? For multiple entries, hold control while you click each book and then click on album space, you will get a question do you want to do all these with same entry, click yes
? Or for entire list, highlight top book/song, hold shift, scroll to and click on last book/song. All book/songs will be highlighted.
o Go to Album space, click on it, answer yes to pop up that asks if you want to do all.
o Type in Audible
? Then all your Audible books will show up when you select Audible on menu.

I am indebted to parannoya for the guide, and inspiration to capture all the above after I figured it out. Anyone has my encouragement to copy, edit, and include this in any post or publication.

Off Topic:

? Buy a good cover that creates enough ?elevation? from buttons to preclude accidental going back to beginning of book (iSkins, etc), protects the case, allows for belt attachment, and has openings to all slots and controls.
? To prevent scratching screen, cover it with a PDA Screen Protector available from office supply houses. Buy the right one, and you can get two protections from each sheet.
? Set up iPod as a disk drive and use iPod to back up (if your house burns down you are much more likely to have your iPod with you than some backup file):
o Calendar and address/contact files
o Financial (like Quicken) back up files
o Favorites
o My Documents
o Personal Folders on e-mail system
o Use freeware to sync calendar and address/contact book from Outlook to iPod. iPod neatly shows a monthly calendar with dots on days with appointments and rolling the wheel to the date and then clicking the center will show that day?s appointments. Same sort of thing for contact information. All this is under ?extras? on menu. Anyone have suggestions for freeware or modestly priced software to do this. I was not completely satisfied with the freeware I used.
? Enjoy. I find by looking at the count of ?songs? that I have read 30 books since April. Jogging, driving, commuting, trips, waiting at the doctor?s office are incredibly enhanced by listening to a book.
