Major problem "OK to disconnect" - cant get it to work

I just bought my iPod today, installed all software, followed the instructions but none of my pc's (i have 2) seems to connect to the iPod. However, my iPod is charging when connected to my firewire card. My question: what's wrong? Is there anyone with a solution or maybe has the same problem?

Neither does it show up in My computer between my other harddrives. I'm really desperate now. Should I send the iPod back to Apple or do you have another solution? Maybe I'm misssing something. Any help is appreciated.

hi dieseljunkie

I recieved my ipod in the post this morning also. it seems we are in (almost) the same boat. so perhaps if i cry for help also we may get some advice! i am running win 2000, with a no-name pcmcia firewire card. i have not installed anything off the cd, as i want to avoid the problems this can cause. when i first connected my ipod after charging it, it showed up in the remove portable devices window, but there was a little yellow mark, showing that it needs to install drivers. after almost a minute, it disappeared, not leaving me long enough to decide how to go about doing anything! i made sure it didnt say 'do no disconnect', then i dis- and re-connected, and it did the same thing. this time i checked the ipod screen and it did say 'do not disconnect', so it thought i had nailed it, but then it disappeared again. now it does nothing when i connect it. so, it appears that my firewire card is working, or did briefly, but now... nada. any help would be massively, massively appreciated, as i really wanna get stuck in! im sure the advice would apply to dieseljunkie also.

thanks

Hi!

Ok...for those who r reading this (apparently not many(!) me and dieseljunkie have been sweating away on our own...:D ) here is an update on my pod...

If you've read the above posts, you'll know i was having some trouble getting the ipod to mount on my win 2000 pc. my firewire card was at first ok, then had a driver error, then was ok again, so i put my foot down with it and uninstalled it, and then reinstalled it. it now seemed fine. ok, so i was back to square one. at this stage when i connected my pod it WAS saying do not disconnect, but it simply wasnt showing up anywhere in windows. i tried a number of things, and i dont actually know what fixed it...

firstly, i stuck the pod cd in. now, before i got my pod i was determined not to use this, but i thought what the heck i can always uninstall stuff, so i whacked it in the drive and installed 'ipod for windows' and the updater, which i already had anyways. i politely declined mmjb, i then straight away uninstalled the manager. so it looks as tho i gained nothing in terms of software by doing this, but i dont know if some small driver that was previously missing is now there or something like that. as well as this, i remembered faintly about turning off anti virus software, so i turned off norton. finally, i pulled out my pcmcia card and then stuck it back in, just to make sure it was still cooperating. it gave me no hassle this time. last but not least i gave my laptop a restart, and when the desktop slowly appeared i crossed my fingers and plugged in the firewire...the pod made noises... do not disconnect appeared...and...yes! it was present and correct in my computer as F:. i waited a few minutes to see if it was indeed stable and it didnt go anywhere! fired up ephpod...it was unable to write the directories...ah yes, the reformat... the updater reformated my pod flawlessly, although i am wondering why apple pack a cd with 2.0.1 on it with apples that have 2.0.2 on them. downgrading, indeed. so, after my successful downgrade, the pod seemed to be still obeying orders. ephpod wrote the directories (after i deleted ipod_control in my computer) and bingo! up and running. so far i have not fed any music to it yet cos my firewire port does not charge so i am pumping up the battery at the mo (i need it to last for 5.5gigs worth...is this possible in one sync by the way?) so fingers crossed i wont have any more probs!

perseverence and the forums are all you need!

Hey dieseljunkie

Its me again....i was just wondering if u have had any luck with your pod yet? hope so buddy. hope my post helped a little bit.

Anyone else reading this... has anybody actually got any ideas what exactly my problem was and what it was that fixed it? Just incase it happens again i dont wanna have to go thru the whole shebang again; nailing it with one solution would be good.

Thanks. By the way, now my ipod is up and running, it is totally, totally awesome. Best bit of kit i ever got by the looks of it. The perseverence is totally worth it. I got 5.5 gigs on it after a number of troublesome syncs, and now i am rockin my socks off!

Take care all

I fixed my problem. I had a SWEEX or something branded card that just didn't work as supposed to in Windows 2000. I tried a Sitecom card which happend to work fine. Also, in one of the PCs, Firewire was already installed but I totally looked over that. Because of the stress on my own PC perhaps. Now it works, and I love it already. Thumbs up for Apple.
