Hey...Im new.
Hey Guys,
I'm new to the board. I've been lurking around for the past week increasing my knowledge on the great IPod. I'm about to order myself one but I was just wanted to clear a few things up.
- I'm going to go with the 10gig because in Australia they're $550 alone. And since it's going to be my christmas present from my parents I also have to wait till christmas :'[ With the 10gig does it come with that carry draw string bag thingy?
- When I get it, should it be up to date with the firmware?
- Firewire Card...Are Adaptec idle for IPods? I'm about to buy one ( http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/product/proddetail.html?prodkey=AFW-4300&cat=%2fTechnology%2fFireWire-1394%2fFireWire-1394+Adapters ) will this work with the Ipod. I will be running it on a PC (Windows XP Pro).
- How will I install it? I'm not going to be using MMJB. I dont exactly know yet..it's either XPlay or EphPod.
Thanks...

i think the black pouch only comes with the ipods that include the dock..that means the 15gb, 20gb, 30gb, and 40gb..

ahh ok. Thanks dude.
# 3 Re: Hey...Im new.
if at all possible, go for the 20, because the price of the accesories that the 20 come with are more then the difference in price of the 20 and 10, thats not even factoring in the storage space being twice as much. the 10 is a really bad deal
pretty much every firewire card will work with the ipod, i see no reason why it wouldn't

to answer your other questions:
-yes the firmware should be up to date (if its not, just update ;))
-that card should work..
-ephpod is recommended..although supposedly itunes for windows is coming out before christmas :)

hmmm, I guess I'd have to agree with Plinko. But in Australia,
10gig = $530
20gig = $699
So that's a roughly a $170 difference just for a remote, and Dock. I'm not too fusted for the dock. The Remote (another $55) I was planning on buying for myself when I get the money from Christmas, after all I am only 16 ;] No job :'[
yeah I was thinking of using Ephpod. XPlay looks good though, but costs $$$.
Also I forgot to ask in the first post, with Ephpod can you just drag and drop complete folders. Example, say if I had a folder "Cool Music" and inside that folder I had 200 mp3s. Could i just drag the folder and all the mp3s are browsable in the Ipod. So it's all neat and organised etc..
Also How's the ipod with handling MP3 VBR?

I conveniently didn't think to ask this question until my iPod was charging on my desk. Thankfully, the answer is: fine. I have not done any dramatic comparisons with other bit rates, but I haven't noticed a major difference when listening to VBR tracks. Which is good because I just downloaded a ton from emusic (http://www.emusic.com).
About your file management question, try vPod (http://www.vonnieda.org/vPod/). You would have to manually add that "Cool Music" folder, but once you did all songs in it could be added with one click. So if you saved all of your music in one directory, even if in different folders within it, you could add it all at once to the library in vPod. How the mp3s would look on your iPod would depend on how they were tagged.
# 7 Re: Hey...Im new.
excellent!
Like since I download music off IRC etc...I have folders like In_Flames-Reroute_To_Remain-2002-TPO and inside have the mp3s tagged like
01-in_flames-reroute_to_remain-tpo.mp3
02-in_flames-system-tpo.mp3
Would they show up like that on the Ipod, or show up what the ID3 tags say?
Sorry for all these questions, I just want to know I am making the right choice.

Melbourne!
Anyway, since the iPod is database-driven, what is displayed depends on the application you're using to load them: the player doesn't load the information from the id3 data directly in each mp3, rather when you transfer them it adds selected id3 data into a large single database file.
For example, EphPod, upon finding no id3 data in an mp3, loads them into the iPod with the current folder name as the artist, which may or may not be helpful.
So, if those above files have proper id3 tags, then generally you'll see those if the program you're using to save them reads them properly.
By the way, go with EphPod ;)
# 9 Re: Hey...Im new.
Yeah, I think I'll use EphPod. I can just import the m3u files from my albums and I should all set to go correct?
=o Sydney! How's the weather up there? I was just in Echuca last weekend. Good weather.
I cannot wait till I get my Ipod...It'll be awesome!
# 10 Re: Hey...Im new.
We're having cooler weather up here after a very hot week, but I digress...
Yep, EphPod appears to support m3u playlists. Since I don't use them I can't say how effective it is, but importing them ought to be fine.
For your sake, I hope the installation will go off without a hitch ;)
# 11 Re: Hey...Im new.
yeah I will use EphPod.
If I use this, will I need to use any software on the Apple CD?
# 12 Re: Hey...Im new.
No. One of the moderators seems to be hellbent on preventing people from using the so-called 'iPod Manager', and for good reason. If you have it installed, the iPod doesn't come up as a normal drive letter by default as it should, and apparently it causes other connection problems too. Meaning that you don't need any of the software on the CD. [I tell a lie, you wouldn't need any of the software with the possible exception of the Updater. You may need that.]
# 13 Re: Hey...Im new.
Yeah, I will load the Updater on.
Thanks dude.
# 14 Re: Hey...Im new.
how does the american dollar compare to the austrailian dollar. Im sure (besides taxes), they are relitavely easy to compare. I think that if you can save up that 699$ go for the 20. But unfortunatly, you will probably spend another 120$ on a firewire card and a case and possibly car excessories.
# 15 Re: Hey...Im new.
well the firewire card I orderd from the PC shop here was $70 AU. It was $50 US.
Ipod, for 10gig it's $530!

Just for next time - check out one of the swap meets (http://www.comtrader.com.au/swap/dates.php3) for a better deal on a firewire card (i bought one last weekend for $30).
also, a few melb retaillers are selling the pods at $20 less than Apple (palaeographics.com.au & streetwise.com.au) - any saving might help you towards buying the remote later eh ;) OR if you have a family member who is a highschool teacher or even a uni student, they might be able to get the education discount (http://store.apple.com.au/edu/). Just some thoughts - I've been trying to justify the $699 price tag for the 20GB myself!
