Resetting Ipod

I have read some posts about people needing to reset the ipod. I plan on using it as a backup for some of my files and was wondering if it is common that it needs to be reset. And if it is, and I have to reset it will it delete my files?

Simply resetting (middle two buttons) shouldn't delete your files, though restoring (returning the iPod to its original state) will do that. Personally, in a few months of use, I've never reset it due to a problem such as a lock-up or a freeze. However some people seem to have no luck with their iPods and have to keep resetting for various reasons.
