New 10GB hard drive problem

I bought a new 10GB iPod and it was working great... for two days. We have a new LaCie firewire card with Windows 2000. I left the iPod plugged into the computer through the iPod Dock Connector for 3 hours and when I returned the iPod was frozen. I tried to reset it as described in all troubleshooting I could find. No luck, only the apple icon. I have contacted Warranty Services who inform me that it is a faulty hard drive (or scratch disk).

My question is, why would this happen after it had successfully downloaded 2GB of music over 2 days. Will servicing the hard drive fix the problem or could there be a danger with having it connected to the firewire for a long period of time?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Try putting it into forced firewire mode:

Do a reset if you can: Menu + Pause/Play until the Apple logo comes up. That may not be possible I know, because that's all you see...

So, try pressing the FF and REW buttons until it says "OK to Disconnect" Then connect it. Do a restore and reupload your tunes.

I've been seeing this more and more recently...not sure why it's happening.

I tried the FF and REW buttons. I only get the apple logo.

My concern is that the problem can happen again after it's fixed. Does it cause problems to leave it connected to firewire for several hours?

Well, you shouldn't leave it connected and mounted on your PC for too long as this causes the HDD to spin constantly. You can leave it in the dock as long as you want, as long as the iPod's been unmounted from the computer.
