Im having huge problems

I don't know if I'm merely ignorant, or missing something really simple, but I have the fire wire card, it has an ac adapter, the ipod is charged and the little ipod icon is showing up in the desk tray, but it has a red x going through it. Nothing I do is working. I've uninstalled and re-installed about 20 times. If someone can spell it out for me, in baby steps, what I need to do from the point at which I turn on my laptop, I will be most appreciative. I'm wondering if it's something as simple as the fact that the fire wire card I bought isn't compatible with my laptop. I bought one at J&R yesterday, which they told me was the one they all use with their ipods, so I figured it was okay. Maybe it is and maybe it's not, I have no idea.

Afaik if the systray icon has a red X in it then the iPod isn't mounted. When you connect your iPod, and there's a red X thru the icon, then you probably won't see the iPod in Windows Explorer either i.e. it isn't mounted by windows and therefore nothing can be done with it.

This means that there's something wrong with the communication between the iPod - firewire - Windows.

Is the firewire properly installed? [check f.e. your hardware settings/device manager and check if there's no exclamation mark somewhere and/or if there's a IEEE1394 bus host controller; if there is check the device status by double clicking on it]

Also be sure that the iPod isn't stuck/locked/frozen cos if so then nothing will be happening when connecting it to your firewire card. If the iPod is frozen reset it [hold the buttons menu+play simultaneously for 15 secs or so].

I am quite a newby when it comes to the iPod...I am only an iPodder for about 2 weeks now and have no experiences with any kind of problems with it, simply cos it's working flawlessly on my XP+sp1 and firewire from day 1.

There will be other iPodloungers who hopefully will have more suggestions than me :D

Mel:

Very often the software that Apple blessed us with causes connection problems. The funny thing is, is that none of it's needed. Windows will by default register your iPod as an external hard drive w/o any software installed at all.

Knowing that, when you run into problems, it's best to uninstall everything that came on the Apple CD and see if at least the iPod shows up as a drive in My Computer. If it doesn't, you can pretty much bet it's a firewire or iPod problem, if it does...well you're in business because you can use other programs to upload tunes.

With that background, here is what I recommend:

1. Uninstall the MMJB iPod Plugin from Add/Remove Programs.
2. Uninstall the "iPod Manager" from Add/Remove Program.
3. Reboot your PC.
4. Connect the iPod.

It should say "Do Not Disconnect" on it. And the iPod should appear as an external drive in My Computer.

If you get that far. You might want to check the "Software Compendium" sticky on the Windows>Software board for recommendations of other programs to use. MMJB is pretty much known as the worst iPod uploading program out there.
