My Ipod's finally getting here saturday and I want everything to be just right. I've been reading all the posts that say that Music Match sucks. Can I use Ephpod or MC9 right out of the box? Or must I install MusicMatch first to do the initial configurations and then change to Ephpod or MC9?
Also which one's better? Ephpod or MC9...and why?

You have to install the drivers to initialize it (not needed afterwards).Once initialized you will have access to the iPOD through a drive letter. Ehpod will ask you the first time what drive letter to use.

Static:You do not need to install anything off of the Apple CD. There are no drivers for the iPod--windows has everything it needs already to recognize the iPod as an external Hard Drive which is really all it is to windows).
All you need to do is download and install the 2.0.1 Updater (http://www.apple.com/ipod/download) from Apple.
Run that and click on the "Restore" button. Then you can use it fine w/MC9 or ephpod.

Adam - you make everything sd clear and I thank you.So what your saying is when you first get the ipod it dosnt have firmware on it to begin with?

Static...thanks. ;)Oh, it does have firmware on it an all. The problem is, all iPods are actually shipped as MiPods (mac iPods). This means the hard drive is formatted for macs (called "HFS+"), which PCs can't read.
Part of the setup process involves converting the MiPod to a WiPod. Formatting the drive to FAT32 file system so your PC can read it properly.
So, all you need to convert it to a WiPod is the 2.0.1 Updater I referenced above. Download it, install it, and run it. Click on Resotre and you're in business.
Oh, the 2.0.1 updater you grab has to be the Windows version, forgot to mention that, but I think you've probably figured that one out already. ;)

So, the 2.0.1 updater is the latest version? I thought I read something about a 2.0.2 somewhere, although it could have been my imagination. Should I be able to copy this from the setup CD provided with the iPod? I only ask because the updater is about 12mb, which will take an absolute age to download on my measly 56k modem.Kali at 2007-11-15 17:12:13 >

2.0.2 is shipped w/new iPods, but not available for download. The only difference according it apple is that it helps them set the contrast default at the factory...Not sure if 2.0.1 came w/your CD or not. You should be able to browse the CD under the windows folder for Updater.exe, launch that and see what version it says at the top.
If not, just download over night. ;)
