welcome to ipodlounge, xixora! :)

are you trying to run a mac ipod on a pc? check out a couple of topics on this board like the forum tips (http://ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7), or the how to convert a mac ipod into a win ipod (http://ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4) thread. do a search if you have a specific question to see if it?s already been answered.

if you have a mac ipod it won?t run on a pc without macopener, or converting it into a win ipod. mac ipods run on the hfs+ system, windows uses fat32. windows doesn?t recognise hfs+. that may be why your ipod is not being recognised.

what os are you using? if you are running win98 on your pc, you may need microsoft?s win98 firewire patch (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;242975).

see if this helps. otherwise post again and we?ll think of something. :D

do you have the new ipod or the older model? if you have the older one, the hdd doesn?t stop spinning when it?s connected to the computer and mounted (it may even spin when it?s unmounted). this causes unnecessary wear on the hdd and temperature buildup. as far as i know, the hdd stops spinning in the new ones, once they?ve been unmounted. overall, i recommend you charge the ipod with the a/c adapter.

Xixora,

I had exactly the same problem..now I aint no computer whizz..but after fiddling around for quite a while, I think this worked..

1) Go to Ipod manager and click "update/restore ipod"...i think
2) Then go ahead and do the format..and lose all the data(that you dont have) on the ipod...that should reset the ipod.
3) then relaunch and set Home system to nothng (do not select musicmatch)

I think my instructions are really screwy, sorry for that, but I figured out that for my case, having installed MMJB was causing the problem..so i uninstalled MMJB as my home program and am using ephpod instead..works like a charm..

ps-CONGRATS and welcome to the world of musical ecstacy.

# 8 Re: New iPod
I thought I was unclear and confusing! :D

But seriously, I didnt get what you meant?

I forgot to clarify, you need to uninstall MMJB..and remember to "enable disk mode" in the ipod mgr...that should(i think) help ephpod recognise the ipod as a drive when you launch it...

# 9 Re: New iPod
also it says D not disconnect. on the iPod and the "removeable disk" in device managaer has a yellow exclamation mark

sorry i'm typin too fast and i dont press keys hard enough. getting worried i wasted 400 quid :p

# 11 Re: New iPod
Hopefully this reassures you; I encountered exactly the same problem..the do not disconnect..the inability of the system to recognise the ipod as a drive etc etc...

Like I said, for me, I think the driver of the problem was MMJB...it was crap..so I basically resetup EVERYTHING. uninstalled everything..reinstalled the ipod manager, but refused to install MMJB...and hey presto...it was solved...

so hang in there...you did not waste 400 quid (though i cant believe you paid 400quid!!!!)

# 12 Re: New iPod
yup 400 smackers... now i think i'm almost there. i just cant rurn the updater to "restore" the ipod. windows just sees it as a RAW drive. it shows the Do Not disconnect screen on the pod and i get this error when trying to run the updater. windows appears to have mounted it as my E: and named it "removable disk"

# 14 Re: New iPod
I had almost the same problem, in my case i couldnt release the Pod becouse som other prog was using the Pod
I solved it by going in to my taskmanager and closing aplication by aplication. And tried to relsease the Pod between every aplication i closed. I came to a prog named something with "flash". I closed it and then it worked. If u dont have the "flash" thingy, just use the same method as i uset, i guess it will work if there are som prog using the pod.

# 15 Re: New iPod
i would try that but now i got a yellow exclaimation mark next to the ipod in disk drives in device manager. i cant believe i've been working 10 hours on this. i cant face my parents to say " sorry i cant give you ?400 back "

# 16 Re: New iPod
try this:

1. delete the drive in your device manager (the yellow exclamation mark).

2. uninstall everything. make sure you manually delete all existing folders as well. make sure your system is like it was before you had the ipod.

3. install everything except mmjb.

4. connect the ipod.

5. sync music with ephpod or other software of your choice.

best of luck. post back if it doesn?t work. we?ll think of something else! :)

# 17 Re: New iPod
OK its now mounted in windows as my H drive but i cant get the updater to work as it freezes now... anyway to manually update the ipod argh. i ran the updater when i was typing here and disk.sys crashed... happened alot now. never had a problem with my pc with this stuff until the ipod ;)

... any ideas? manual way to format and install firmware? ephpod dont work straight off because it cant make some directories?
i appreciate this help i am stressed been working 10hours 40 mins on this thing with no luck... nice games mind ;) ( dont think it has stopped charging either? can you ruin the battery? )

# 18 Re: New iPod
its asking me to update again when i mount... and it cant lock my ipod? i'm gonna try closing down a program by program do i need the ipod manager open to run updater?

found a service running iPodService? do i need that also?

ok weird. i turned off disk mode ran updater came up with what the firmware isnt compatible with ipod. turned it back on formatted then had that it couldnt lock the drive again

# 19 Re: New iPod
for one, you can?t overcharge the battery, so rest easy on that one. i need to think about the rest. in the meantime, try researching your problem on this site (search feature). maybe try everything (follow all instructions) again!? sorry, but i?m stumped at the moment. can?t think of anything else. one problem is, i don?t have the new ipod, so i can?t test it myself. hard to solve these problems purely in theory. maybe i?ll have an insight tomorrow, or c.c.r., ashawley or one of the other mods will think of something. if all else fails call apple. either tech support can help you, or they?ll ask you to send it in and repair or replace it.

# 21 Re: New iPod
I had similar problems and in the end everything worked out fine.

The problem I had is all attributed to MusicMatch. To make it work I un-installed all the software provided by Apple.

Next I followed Kurt?s suggestion for a third party install. It is detailed in the old forum under iPod Windows Software. The subject is:

?Don?t want MMJB on new iPod? Dig this??

http://www.xsorbit1.com/users/dennx/index.cgi?board=windowssoftware&action=display&num=1052190856

You can then use a 3rd party product to do the sync. I use Media Center 9 and it works great.

Note: I continued to have problems until I un-installed everything from Apple (iPod plug-in, MusicMatch, & iPod updater).

Good luck,

Randy

# 23 Re: New iPod
The *only* thing you need to make your iPod work is to format it for Windows. That's the updater. You do not need iPodwater or ipodsrv to be installed.

What I recommend you do is to copy the file c:\program files\iPod\ipod updater\updater.exe somewhere like your desktop.

Then, uninstall all the iPod Software and the MMJB iPod plugin and MMJB from your computer.

Reboot.

Turn off any anti-virus software you have on, it could access the drive and prevent the updater from working

Turn off any "disk management" applications you have (e.g. Norton Utilities or any other disk checking software).

Run the Updater.exe file that you copied to your desktop w/o the iPod connected. Then connect your iPod.

It should recognize it and allow the format.

If not, let us know what type of firewire card you have. Also, make sure if you're using XP that you have the latest service packs installed.
