Audigy Firewire?

I was just wondering. I'm an iPod newbie...I'm about to get one here real quick. And I only have USB 1.0, but I do have an Audigy. Will the firewire on the Audigy be good enough to use with an iPod? I understand there are various programs I can use to transfer files, but what do I need to do before that? Just plug the cord right into the Audigy firewire port, and it'll be ready to go? Please help..

If you want a free program, use EphPod. (http://www.ephpod.com) The latest version should be fine now (2.60). But if you don't mind spending money on it, get MC9 (http://www.mediajukebox.com/mediacenter/). Trust me you'll love it.

As for the firewire card, Audigy has had many problems in the past. So if you start to have problems, 95% chance it's the card.

Hmmmmm...define "problems".

I just got my iPod 10gig yesterday and I hooked it up to my PC using the firewire connection on my Audigy. It works fine. I was worried about the Audigy firewire too, but I read a few other posts about it before I picked up the iPod. Apparently some believe that there's a problem with the combination of VIA chipset and the Audigy card. I'm using an Nforce2 chipset and i've had no problems when syncing up.

Yeah, I've got a VIA chipset...so I might be in trouble then? Or is there a chance that I still may be able to use it fine?

I have heard rumors here and there that Audigy firewire doesn't seem to work well with Ipods... I suggest purchasing a Belkins card, they typically work quite well with ipods...

What exactly is a VIA chipset? I have a Chipset Identification Utility and it says that I have an Intel 850 Chipset. Is this the same as a VIA chipset or something completely different? By the way, I too have an audigy card and a 10GB winPod touchwheel on its way here so I'm concerned about the compatibility as well.

My old PC has a VIA chipset, and an Audigy sound card; my 20GB iPod works fine on it. The motherboard is a Tyan Trinity 400, old enough to have an ISA slot on it. You MAY be able to avoid issues if you are using XP (as I am). Be sure to get the latest 4-in-1 drivers for your Via-chipset motherboard.

the sb audigy is as good as any firewire card. i get a steady 5/6mb transfer and it chrages the ipod. The only reason why it may not work on some systems is because some people:
a) cant wire it up properly
b) havent installed the right drivers.

Ok, well, I have actually installed the latest 4-in-1's, and the latest Audigy drivers. Hopefully it'll all work out. And yes, I'm running XP.

Sorry but I have to strongly disagree with you on this one.

I can't tell you how many folks I've had to help w/audigy cards. The problem is that Creative built their own 1394 standard (SB1394) and didn't adhere to the IEEE1394 standard.

I've seen it time and again. The newer cards seem to be better off, but the percentage of folks that have audigy's that work vs. not working in my experience has been some where around 75% not and 25% working.

And even those that do get them to work often have problems mysteriously appear down the road.

Just my 2 cents...

via is a chipset manufacturer like intel. so no it's not the same as a via chipset and the via/audigy compatibility problems dont apply to you

So would the new 4-in-1's and new Augigy drivers maybe help deal with the compatibility issue?

well if it works now then you probably dont have to worry :) the 4in1s do fix some stuff so if you're having problems it's worth a shot. might also want to look for updated audigy drivers also

75% not working? That's a scary thought for us Audigy owners. Hopefully I will be part of the 25% when I get my iPod in a few days. By the way, ashawley, what sort of troubleshooting have you done to help the unfortunate Audigy owners? Thanks.

Just got my 15GB iPod a couple of days ago, and it seems to work fine with my SB Audigy card, so far. My main problems have been with trying to sort out the plethora of information (some conflicting) about how to set up the unit under Windows, and which music program to use. Can't say I'm very happy with the current options, and the utter lack of helpful information appearing on the iPod display to let you know when it's formatting, transferring music, sitting there, OK to be undocked, etc. In other words, the Mac implementation may be elegant, but the Win side is far from it

Search the old forums and you'll find tons of posts where I've helped or tried to help Audigy owners. The problem is that yes, given specific configurations you can get failing ones to work possibly. But my suggestion is usually to evaluate what your time is worth vs. running out and buying a cheap $20 firewire card that will work perfectly all the time.

I figure a couple hours of futzing is worth the $20...

I had a Audigy 1 standard.. the one with no box for connections or anything, and i too was very worried about the problems with the firewire on it because i had no free PCI slots in my computer, and the delivery day of my 10gb gen 2 touchwheel was coming closer and closer... but it works fine, tranfers at about 5.5 to 6 mb/sec which is fast enough! 10gb in 25 minutes will do me fine thankyou!

My advice, try it, if it dont work, spend the money.. Firewire cards aren't expensive!

i have an audigy platinum card.

first off i installed the ipod software from the CD that comes i with the ipod, but didn't install mmjb.

i then connected the dock and ipod to the firewire port on the Platinums dock and the ipod setup program found the ipod and formatted it

then i ran ephpod and it found the ipod straight away and i was able to copy music to it

i then decided to connect the firewire cable to the audigy firewire port on the back of the pc. i connected it and nothing happened - i then noticed on the installation CD for the sound card there's a firewire program, i installed that and everything works beautifully.

hope this helps :)

I was part of the 75% I guess. I kept getting all kinds of errors with my Audigy. I went to Best Buy and bought the Belkin firewire card after talking to Apple support and it works fine. The Apple guy actually reccomended an Adaptec firewire card, but said that any Windows certified card would work. Evidently the Audigy is not Windows certified.

# 20 Re: Audigy Firewire?
so you're saying the reason me using an audigy is the source of my problem?

here it is: I can connect, sync, transfer etc. just fine, with whatever program i use, but I can't eject/disconnect the Ipod! I tried every method, usually it says "Can't disconnect because another program is still accessing the device" although that's not true, or it just says "an error occured while trying to eject". I can eject it using MMJB, but only on my screen it says "It's now okay to disconnect your ipod", on the ipod itself the "Don't Disconnect" keeps blinkin....I did ignore it till now, but by doing so i just wiped it clean again...crap!

btw, i have the 30GB ipod, the VIA chipset and the Audigy 1...

any recommendations, or do I really have to buy a new firewire/usb 2.0 card? If so, which one would you recommend, firewire or USB 2.0?

Support for USB 2.0 from iPod isn't available until June, so if you want to start playing with your new iPod immediately, you'll have to go firewire... It seems like the Adaptec 4300 is the card of choice, after reading many messages on this forum. I cant speak for everyone (and I dont own one) but I have read nothing but good things on this forum about it...
