iPod & usb (no this isnt the same question)

Hi All,

I wanted to check if the iPod is able to current to charge the battery when using a USB1.0 or USB1.1 cable.

I do have a Firewire PCMCIA card for my laptop, only it won't charge (most don't). Hence it would be great if i could connect it to my USB port when the battery is running low.

I also have a USB charger car adaptor (for my PocketPC Phone) that i'm thinking i could use to charge the iPod in the car...

Win, win & win i hope

Thanks for your help.

USB does not provide enough power for the iPod. The proprietary Firewire/USB cable that you need to buy for use w/USB connects to the iPod on one end, and on the other end it has a USB connector and a firewire connector. The USB plugs into the PC, the firewire plugs into the AC adaptor that comes w/the iPod. That gets plugged into the wall outlet. You then have power to the iPod.

But...I really don't recommend that you use USB1 w/the iPod (neither does Apple). It'll be super slow and I wouldn't want the iPod's HDD spinning for that many hours on end...

There is another firewire solution. Even for PCMCIA cards. You can either get a card that has an external power supply, or get a card that has 2 6 pin ports. One port you connect to the iPod, the other port you connect (with an additional cable) to the AC adaptor, which goes into an outlet. Bingo, powered iPod.
