sony vaio, ipod, no connect- HELP please
Hey, so I have a Sony Vaio, originally run on Windows ME. Bought XP and installed that, so that is now my operating system.
Anyways, whenever I try to connect my iPod to my computer through the Firewire port (with their little 4prong adapter thingie that comes with iPod), it will not read it.
The iPod says do not disconnect, but the computer won't identify any iPod.
What to do?
Thanks

Ah, you're in good shape actually. "Do Not Disconnect" means the iPod has been recognized by the PC. Which is lucky because a lot of built in firewire ports don't work well w/the iPod.
I'm betting you have either MMJB or the iPod Manager software installed. Both of those will prevent windows from assigning the iPod a drive letter. You need to "enable firewire disk mode" in both programs. Or uninstall them. If you're not using MMJB, just get rid of both of those programs.
If you planned on using MMJB but are still having problems I'd save yourself the headache and try one of the alternatives listed in the Software Compendium (http://ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2286). They are all better than MMJB.

I actually do have a drive letter! It just doesn't recognize the iPod in iPod Manager and I can't find it in M.M.J.B.

OK, then you're in better shape.
I highly recommend you check out any one of the programs in the Software Compendium. Uninstall iPod Manager (it's not needed) and uninstall the MMJB iPod Plugin (and MMJB if you want). Then use one of the other programs. I'm partial to MC9, but any of them will get you going which is what you want at this point.
Really, search these boards. MMJB is considered horrid by most everyone.

Amazing- after 2 and a half (I do not lie) hours on the phone with Apple Tech Support, I checked back here and Adam gives me the idea to just go for Ephrod or what have you, I do it, and it works!!!
Quick questions- how do you get CDs onto Ephrod? Or do I need a separate software to rip CDs up?

If you went the ephpod route you need a different program. As it states in the compendium, ephpod is a program that only uploads to the iPod. It doesn't rip/manage your media, tag or anything like that.
The benefit is that it's free and it'll get you up and running, the drawback is that it does one thing really.
If you're up for it, check out MC9 for a fully integrated option as well as support for the iPod's Ratings, Playcounts and Last Played info. This way you can make Smartlists in MC9 that take into account the tunes you've listened to on your iPod.
Oh, and that'll be $25 bucks. Isn't that what Apple charges. :D :)
Seriously, welcome to the 'lounge.
