firewire cable
My new ipod should turn up tomorrow and I want to be ready to start using it as soon as it arrives and I think I need a 6-pin female to 4-pin male converter.
On my laptop I have what I think is a 4-pin firewire port, could somebody please confirm that the ipod firewire cable terminates with a 6-pin male connector.

ah, that's a bit of a ####! Oh well, can't be bothered to fork out ?50 for another power adaptor, guess I can live without for the time being. Is it possible to get power through a pcmcia firewire card? I'd consider that if I can pick one up cheap.

You can, but it will generally require the purchase of a power pack. As far as I know, all PCMCIA cards work like this. Some may include the power pack, but I haven't heard of any.
When I bought my 30Gb iPod, I picked up Belkin?s PCMCIA Cardbus Firewire Card. It doesn't supply power, however there's a jack on the card for you to plug in a 12v source. Exact rating needed is listed in the manual, and of course, this is an option (not supplied).
I know someone had released a cable for PCMCIA USB cards that supplied power through a second USB port. With this cable, one device would occupy two USB ports on the cardbus card, one for communication and one for power. Has anyone heard of such a beast for FireWire? (Not that it would do us Gen.3 iPod users any good, now that it has a proprietary cable)
