Win98SE and Firewire?

I know this has been a problem for a number of people but despite trying most things I haven't been able to get my Win98SE based desktop PC (Dell 4100) to recognise the iPod even just as an external drive. I've dowloaded Windows 98 Second Edition 1394 Storage Supplement from Microsoft since this patch has helped some people. In the device manager on connecting the iPod it is under other devices with a yellow question mark beside it; inside this folder the Apple Inc_Ipod is there but with a yellow question mark superimposed with an exclamation mark. This suggests a driver is required (?) but where do get this from if it is indeed needed? I haven't downloaded any software to this computer, and was going to download Ephpod to use as my syncing software.

The firewire connection is through an Adaptec DuoConnect PCI card that appears to be correctly connected since it appears to charge the iPod and allows full functionality thro' the USB2 ports (with a Belkin memory stick reader). I chose Adapatec since a lot of people have suggested their cards are very reliable with iPods.

The ipod has been restored on my IBM A21p laptop, so is Windows formatted with FAT32 compliance. On this computer the connection is thro' a SIIG USB2+Firewire cardbus DV kit (which incidentally worked well, and has a separate jack for external powering of this cardbus card). The laptop runs with Windows 2000 Pro and has succesfully transferred data just in firwire mode and music via EphPod. So, the ipod works fine on that sytem.

Anyone know if/where i need drivers to make the ipod recognisable on the Win98SE desktop computer? Any suggestions?

I believe the yellow question mark menas that it hasn't been installed corectly. Try uninstalling and reinstalling, since you have the Firewire patch. Perhaps you needed to download the patch before you installed it?

I'm not sure what to install/reinstall? The patch is in place now, but beyond that I've not installed anything since I was hoping that just plugging the ipod into the Firewire port would allow its recognition as an external firewire drive. Maybe I need some additional drivers off the ipod CD (any ideas of where/what they might be called?), but having FAT32 formatted the ipod on my laptop I didn't think there was anything more to be done for the desktop to recognise the ipod (and i don't want to install MMJB since I'd like to use EphPod). I've reset the ipod a number of times and rebooted the desktop so not sure what else to do.

Thanks again for any suggestions.

... just realised that I obvioulsy installed drivers for the USB2/Firewire DuoConnect card ... you think I need to re-install that, even though the USB2 works fine and the Firwire provides power (and at least sufficient recognition for Win98 to show the device is present even if with yellow qusetion marks in device manager)? ... probably worth a go since nothing else seems to work ...

Microchips, thanks for the help ... the re-install seems to have worked ... not quite sure what was different but maybe just having the patch in place before the re-installation of the firewire card was sufficient to provide the correct environment to allow the ipod to be recognised. Thanks again.

No problem. I think someone had this trouble before.

Anyway, glad I could help.
