Old 10GB for 199.99 or New 15GB for 314.00?

So here's the deal. I can get an Old (touchWheel) 10GB WinPod, new, for 199.99, or I can do the Dell.com thing and get the new 15GB model for a little over 300 dollars. Considering the fact that the new models supposedly have some glitches, should I just buy the classic model and wait a year or so until all the bugs on the new unit are worked out, and then trade up? Or should I just go straight for the new model? Thanks.

I don't like the new ipods, they look like bars of soap, but I know many will disagree with me. IMHO, the classic design looks and operates the best. I had a new design 10gb, that I did not even open. I sold it on ebay and bought a 20gb after trading in a classic design 10gb. I needed more space. You are the one who is going to have to live with the decision that you make.

And about 4 hours less battery life in the new ones too. That's something to consider.

Thanks to the both of you for the reply. True, there is a reduced battery life on the new iPod as a result of having a slimmer design. Also, what are your thoughts on the all touch-button interface? Being, new to the iPod, are the classic touchwheel iPods durable, in terms of having the buttons respond, over time? One last question, are the insides of the touchwheel and docking iPods essentially the same? Thanks.

I've had my 10GB v1 iPod for 14 months and don't have a problem with it and it rarely if ever leaves my side. I'm more concerned about the headphone jack then the buttons or the scroll wheel.

BTW I recently had to clean my scroll wheel that was getting stained from newspaper ink and just used a really mild soap and a cloth towel and it is as good as new.

Just get a good case for it and treat the headphone jack with a little TLC and you should be happy with it.

Hey Kinetic,

I've owned both a Gen 2 and the new iPods that were just released. I've really grown to love my new 15 GB iPod. It's MUCH smaller than the 20 GB iPod I used to have, much lighter, and sleeker looking. In terms of the functionality, my new 15 GB iPod is the leader in every category except for battery life. The battery life on my old 20 GB iPod was longer. I'm not too worried about that though, considering I have a 4-year warranty with Best Buy. If the battery life ever becomes a problem, i'll just get a new iPod :D

You can get a good gen 2 10GB iPod for $200 if you look.

In fact, there's someone selling one on the Classifieds forum here! Have a look. I got mine on eBay for $202 + $10 shipping to Canada.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Bill McNair (posted above) said I should take care of the headphone jack and that the buttons really won't be a problem. Bill, or anyone, how do you take care of the headphone jack? i.e. do you always unplug the headphones when you are not using the iPod or when it is in transit? Thanks again.

I have heard, although it hasn't happened to me of people breaking the jack. I do unplug the headphone and the iPod usually sits in my coat pocket all day. Until recently, it wasn't something I worried about, but after ready a few complaints I did decide to take some extra care of the jack.

Southside Irish:

Do you mean on V2's or v3's?

The plastic ring/barrier thing on my v2, crack and broke a bit once, so with v2's yes it does happen.

I just switched mine in at a local Apple store and they gave me a new v2.

Anyhow, while I was there I got a chance to futz with the v3's, I have to say that my honest opinion, I dont like them very much.

1. They dont feel as solid as the v2's. I dunno, maybe its just me, the v3's just dont feel as solid.

2. I like the button placement on the v2's better. While driving, and the iPod hooked up..I can feel down and click to the next song alot easier then trying to remember what button to press for Next Song or Pause on v3's; since the buttons are on the top in a row, rather than on the sides and tops of the wheel.

3. Accesories. If you are lookin to pick some up along with your iPod purchase, you are going to find a stockpile of differents of types of accesories for it.

Unlike the v3's, the v2's have been out for a while, hence, lots of accesories. With the new design of the v3 it will still be a short while til compatible 3rd party accesories are available.

There are definately cons to owning one also, I will be fair. However, my opinion stands with the v2.

Ahh, the age old computer conundrum; do you buy the $500 special at WalMart with last year's processor, or buy the bleeding edge processor for $2000? (well, not exactly the same, but you get my point)

Here's how I answered. I just bought a 10GB gen 2 touchwheel. Both the "old" and "new" iPods will play MP3, for me, that was all I wanted. I have to believe that eventually Apple will release an update to allow me to use AAC and Audible files without hacks.

Here's the question I think you have to answer: Are you willing to sacrifice a couple hours of playing time and $114 to get a dock and 5GB?

Choose wisely, young grasshopper.

I bought a 15GB on 5/3. I had some problems getting FW and software sorted out (I'm a newbie though), but I have not had problem 1 with the iPod itself and I use it every day (I don't question there are bugs, but it's not as if we all have problems). Not much time, but I am completely thrilled (and fascinated) with my v3. Like everything else, you have to decide what's right for you - opinions of others don't matter at all in the end.
