1st timer - I need urgent help

I'm having problem after problem and feel like giving up now.

I've got an iPod for Windows, and I'm running Windows ME on my PC.

I go and buy a USB 2.0/Firewire lead from Apple only to discover that it's not supported on Windows ME. What a great start, thanks a lot Apple!

Now, when I install the software I can't configure the iPod, it simply won't let me complete that step of the process.

Next up, it shows on my PC as an external hard-drive, so I guess it is picking it up. However, the Music Match and the iPod manager software doesn't recognise it. Just GREAT!

Now I'm getting the folder + exclamation mark icon, even when I hold menu + play/pause to try and reboot the stupid thing.

There is no real tech support on Apple's behalf - it would seem they like to take the money and run.

CAN ANYONE PLEASE GIVE AN OUNCE OF HELP!?

OK, what you need to do is to first do a restore to get the thing working again. The folder w/exclamation mark is telling you the iPod isn't properly formated.

Open the Updater program (Start>Windows>iPod>Updater) run that. Click on the Restore button and let it reformat the iPod.

Next, I recommend that you ditch MMJB. Most users have. Uninstall the MMJB iPod Plugin then uninstall MMJB. Next uninstall iPod Manager (it's not needed). Leave the Updater installed in case you need to do a restore later.

Now, it's decision time. Check out the Software Compendium (http://ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2286) and select the program you'd like to use to upload tunes.

I much prefer MC9 as it's an all-in-one option that does everything you need to do w/your Mp3s. But it costs $40 (there's a free trial though). But don't fret, ephpod works well too and is free. Just doesn't have all the bells and whistles.

You'll get there...

I'm having a similiar problem in that the ipod shows up as a drive but I can't get by the configure step in the instalation process. ALso, the ipod updater doesn't see the ipod either.

Should I just format the disk through windows (ei. click on the drive and format)? Or will that just screw things up more?

You can try that, but it's no guarantee that it will work either. Usually these are the fault of the connection (firewire or usb) what are you using?

I also suggest trying it w/o the iPod Manager installed. Just run the updater from Start>programs>iPod>Updater.

I've tried uninstalling the ipod manager and just using the updater, but it can't see the ipod so everything is greyed out.

I'm using a USB2 via notebook pcmcia port and Windows ME.

Thanks for the response!

Sorry, I'm a firewire guy and really haven't had a lot of experience w/USB. It seems to me to be somewhat finiky w/the iPod.

Wish I could help more....
