Help! Cannot Restore/update

my ipod is just frozen!!1 if i disconnect it, it will do so, , and if i reset, i get the exclamation point/folder. so--if i try to run the updater/restore (2.0.1) it just hangs!!!!!!! eeeeeep!

i have a newly formatted xp machine!!! can anyone give me some tips!! best buy has reneged on their promise to exchange it--they want instead to send it in for repair, which could take 30 days (!)

any thoughts would be very very appreciated

if i run the restore program, i just get an hourglass for a few minutes, then it says "can't mount ipod"

what should i do?

if i look in "my computer", it says to insert a disk (Huh?)

Peter: I merged you're two threads. Please don't start another topic, post to the one you already started, or better yet, edit your original post.

Now, as far as your problem:

Try uninstalling the iPod and your firewire card from device manager. Then reboot. Sometimes I've seen that fix this problem.

Is this the first time you've ever tried to connect this iPod to this computer w/XP installed? Normally XP has no problem w/the iPod.

Can you format the drive from w/in Windows? Doing a "Quick Format"?

The other trick to try is Forced Firewire Mode. Do a reset, then at the Apple logo, press the FF and Rew keys until it says OK to Disconnect. Connect the iPod, it should change to "Do Not Disconnect". Then try the Updater.
