Ipods new rival?

Have anyone seen this yet? (Its the Philips hdd100)

http://www.audio.philips.com/betatest_HDD100.asp

It seems to rise above ALL the other potential IPod killers out there, plus, it is a pc native player. Still the navigation system seems like a rip-off of the Ipod. What do you guys think?

Here's an unbiased comparsion site. (http://www.dapreview.com/)

It's an okay player. The only real thing I see better is that they got the battery life right... Some reviews I've read has it slated for 16hours!!!
That and the fact it's about the same size as the old 10gig iPods, is something amazing.

EDIT: my mistake, -the long battery life is probably only because output is a mere 5mW per channel (iPod has 30mW per channel). You're going to have a hard time driving that unit without an amp.

Yeah, but will it have features such as a contact list and note viewer like the ipod does? Still, I love the battery life...16 hours...wow, that rivals my md player...

Hey, compared to the new gen 3 15 gb ipod, the player is actually BIGGER (hdd100: 4.2 L x 2.5 W x 0.8 H, versus ipod: 4.1 by 2.4 by 0.62 inches)... hmmm, still the claim for smallest "recording" jukebox for the hdd100 only holds true until apple comes out with the recorder accessory for ipod...

Maybe so, but it seems like the only way the iPod will be able to record is if it's connected to the dock. Where as the phillips HDD100 can do the recording on the unit itself.

That was not the impression I got. I think you'll be able to plug a mic in the dock connector on the botton of the iPod.

Oh that sucks...I was planning on using the ipod in the near future (namely this fall) to record lectures and stuff...

In the near future, Apple will be releasing an accessory that will allow you to do this.

Oh and please, that thing doesn't stand a chance to my precious 30gb winpod. Besides the battery life it loses in every other category. I would never need that kind of battery time anyways.

Still the magnesium case and the harden glass seem nice (not to mention durable) my sony md mz-n10 had a magnesium case, it was a great case... Nevertheless, I agree whole-heartedly that the Ipod seems to have a sleeker and simplier look and the philips model has a dark, brooding, futuristic appeal...

I would have got the iriver ihp 100, but then the new ipod come out. The ihp will also be about $400+ , which is to much, atleast compared to the ipod 15gb version. I like the remote though.

Some of these responses are amazing! And I don't mean in a good way. Instead of using illogical and nonsensical arguments like "Ipod Rules" or "Gosh, its ugly, the Ipod is prettier," how some more constructive criticisms. Exactly what about the competitor models causes them to fall short of the Ipod? Shorter battery life? Less user-friendly lay-out? Lower output? Poor sound quality? Unreliability? Repair issues? Other features? With some many other legitimate issues to discuss, resorting to comments about the visual aesthetics of a competitor's product only lends credibility to the position that the competition may be better!

Perhaps even another approach would be viewing competition from other manufacturers as good for the Ipod. Clearly, competing manufacturers are putting out a lot of good products. While Apple was the first with the Ipod, technology does not stand still and the constant movement towards improvement and additional features can only be good for us as consumers. Quality, usability and features increase, while prices drop. For example, I really like my 20G Ipod. BUT, I'd like to see some features that are offered by competitors. Some examples:

Queue or On the Fly playlist creation - available in the Nomad Zen
USB 2.0 - available on the eDigital Odyssey 1000
Built-in FM radio/transmitter - available on Samsung YEP YP900
Recording capability - available on the Archos Jukebox
Song identification from tuner - Digital Innovations Neuros

In fact, many of the foregoing competitors have SEVERAL of these desired functions in a HD based MP3 player about the size of the older Ipods. This SHOULD put pressure on Apple to improve the Ipod. For example, why should I have to spend an ADDITIONAL $35.00 for the hard-to-find iTrips attachment so that I can broadcast tunes from the Ipod to my car radio? The YEP 900 and Neuros have this capability AND the player cost is equal to or less than equivalent capacity Ipods. This applies even to simple features repairable with software upgrades. Queing or playlist creation on an MP3 player has long been a STANDARD feature on even some of the first generation MP3 players (e.g., Nomad Jukebox). Why did it take Apple so long to offer this on the Ipod (new generation) and why isn't it offered as a patch for older Ipods? The technology has been there for years - a lifetime and a half in the world of computers.

So if this discussion is intended to be productive and useful, as opposed to just simple whining about Ipod being the alleged "king" of hard drive based MP3 players then let's get back to that. Let's do some REAL comparisons - feature-by-feature, quality, durability, size, ergonomics, etc. WHY is the Ipod still king? Consumers should be open-minded and willing to look at ALL alternatives. That way we CAN pressure Apple into improving the beloved Ipod.

Thanks for letting me post my rant.

The new iPod has queuing/on the fly playlist creation (to some degree, -hopefully apple will implement this to the fullest degree in the next firmware update), it will have USB2.0 compatibility come mid June, and recording capability seems very possible (speculation has it that peripherals will be coming to enable this).

Its a huge rip of the iPod. Did you see the way the menus move? Unbelievable they said they patented the "soft key technology". That makes me really mad, Apple will probably not do anything (it seems like Apple never sues the companies that come up with players that look like the iPod for some reason).
