Why I never purchased my iPod..
So it has been a week of debating.. Do I? Don't I? Is it worth the money? Will I use it? What else can I use my money for that's more useful??
Well.. Tonight comes and I decide to head down to Best Buy to purchase it.
Price Tag: $459.95CDN.
10GB version.
I was expecting this as I saw it listed at this price last week. I ask the salesman to open the box so I can play with it and have a look at it. Salesman was very friendly and helpful. I get this little baby in my hands. I know I need my own USB cable, which i'm not very happy with, but, i'll manage since I have like 15 of them. I look at the connector and realize it's not the regular USB connection and I need to buy Apple's cable for $39.95.
No thanks, i'll pass.
Just want to make one thing clear here. Money is not the issue in my decision NOT to purchase it. I refuse based on principle to pay an extra $39.95 for Apple's connector so I can connect it to my PC.
Why would Apple do this!?? Now i'm a little disapointed that I never got my iPod, but, I just can't waste $39.95 on a cable that should be supplied with a $459 mp3 player. Maybe if Apple wakes up and starts shipping them with the cable, I may purchase one.
Just wanted to share :(

Buy a firewire PCI card for MUCH cheaper than that (5 to 10USD on the internet)

The firewire cable comes free and most people with a reasonably new PC have a firewire socket these days. Check your soundcard, most creative cards since the Audigy 1 have firewire sockets built in.

Well if it does have the audigy card there will be a very good chance that the ipod will not work. Some people have had success with that card, but they have been few and far between. Just go ahead and buy a firewire card, if you decide to change your mind.

Works fine with mine straight out of the box.

Good for you for being one of the few.
# 7 Re: Why I never purchased my iPod..
Please, please reconsider.
I know it's a hassle when a high cost item requires further adaptors/ cables to work it but Ipod is no different to many audio/ video products (Scart leads with TV's for example). You're missing out on a life changing experience for the want of spending a few dollars!
Ipod is unbelivable, the ability to carry with you thousands of songs to match your every mood is a sublime experience (ok so I'm addicted)
Swallow your pride march back inot the shop and get out the cash, you wont regret it

CompUSA has Adaptec 4300 Firewire cards on sale for $20, or at least they did last week.
It's your loss I guess :P
# 9 Re: Why I never purchased my iPod..
Buy a firewire card, and you'll be more than satisfied.
# 10 Re: Why I never purchased my iPod..
Or even better, for a superior computing experience and full compatibility straight out of the box, just buy a Macintosh.

Precisely what Apple would like to see happen.

I have a Creastive Soundblaster Audigy card in my XP PC and my iPOD worked fine out of the box for the past couple of months. This is because for the past 8 years I have sworn blind neve to install HP, or Creative Labs drivers/software - this policy has meant my 2 PC's work a treat. But guess what, I installed the Creative Audigy Drivers over the weekend - as some Games mag said games run faster if you instal Creative soundcard drivers as this stops the soundcard using the PC's CPU. I thought they've had eight years to sort themselves out - the PC industry is quite mature now, so all should be OK :D
WRONG!!!!
Now my PC freezes up when I connect my iPOD to the Creative Firewire port everytime. I can't do anything with the iPOD and my PC when they are both connected. Luckily I have USB - so I am using that as from today until I resolve the problem. It's a nightmare working out how to unistall the Creative drivers.
My advice - don't install the Creative drivers, stick to the XP drivers.

Though I agree with you about Creative's drivers in the past I have never once had a problem with the Audigy card or many driver sets i have used with it.
The Soundblaster Live was notoriusly bad especially in conjunction with a VIA chipset but I have been plain sailing with my audigy for a couple of years now.
I am suprised that the card works at all using simply the windows drivers.
One suggestion that I can make is when installing Creative Software do not install the entire suite of products. Only install the drivers, the diagnostics and what is essentially a control panel ( I dont remember its exact name). In fact you can get away with simply installing the drivers
Avoid the jukebox, the Control bar and anything else which gets bundeled on the Creative disks, these are pretty useless and just cause problems.
I don't know where you got the drivers that you are currently using but I would recomend also going to the Creative site and downloading the most recent set. They have an autoupdate function now and the newest set are a significant improvement in terms of performance that previous sets.
