New Ipod. Help!
i was given the newly designed ipod as a gift yesterday. however my computer is running windows 98, which is of course not compatible with the software included with the ipod. are there any alternative softwares i can use besides XPlay<<which i have downloaded but kept giving me the message to "plug in my ipod" even though i have and EphPod<<<which i could not install my ipod as a regular drive in my computer. it was not able to read it.
any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

the ipod won?t be recognised if you don?t have the win98 firwire update. ( http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;242975)
plug in your ipod after updating and a symbol for a removable hdd will appear next to the system clock. start ephpod or xplay and enjoy!

I've downloaded the firmware update, however my ipod still won't get recognized. i tried xplay again and it still pops up a message to "plug in an ipod". and according to ephpod, when i plug in my ipod, i should wait for windows to recognize it but to no avail. i'm stuck :( please help!

if you?ve never used it, the ipod is still formatted as a mac ipod. this means it?s a hfs+ hdd, not a fat32 hdd. windows doesn?t recognise hfs+. so you need to reformat it using the supplied cd. since you can?t do this at your computer, go to a friend?s place (with a computer with xp and a firewire card) and reformat it there; or go to a computer store (like compusa, best buy, maybe even an apple store?!) where you can find a pc with said properties and do it there. maybe the staff at compusa will let you use one of the pc?s, if you explain your problem to them. once you?ve reformatted the ipod to fat32 it ought to work under win98 with ephpod.

Ok, let me make sure I'm getting this straight. Even though I have downloaded Ephpod, I still have to install the ipod ware from the cd? And since I'm running win98se, that would explain the 'THIS VERSION OF OPERATING SYSTEM NOT SUPPORTED' message I get when trying to install the ipod software?? So there is no way around it? I HAVE to go somewhere to a computer with an OS that will actually support the software, and reformat the ipod there??
I swear my headache just keeps getting bigger :(
I thought it was bad enough for fork out the extra 30 bucks for the firewire card earlier tonight, but at least I thought my iPod troubles were over. *sigh*
If i'm wrong, please feel free to tell me otherwise? Of course I'm secretly hoping someone will. ;(

No, you shouldn't have to install the softare. You just need to run the updater which I believe runs on 98SE.
Browse the CD for Updater.exe.
Copy this file to your desktop or someplace handy and run it. Click the "Restore" button. This will format your ipod.
Then, fire up ephpod. If you get an error message that says "Cannot create iPod_control folder". Open up My Computer, there will be the iPod drive in there, open the iPod drive and delete the ipod_control folder. It's hidden so if you don't see it, make sure you have viewing of hidden files turned on.
Then fire up ephpod and it'll be able to create the directories it needs.
If the Updater.exe program doesn't run on 98 you still have another option. Right click the iPod drive in My Computer, click "Format". Do a "Quick Format" then run ephpod...

Thanks Adam, you are truly a super mod :) I was able to copy the file, but unfortunately now I get the message 'iPod is not connected' :( Talk about frustrated. I've got it plugged in right, but I just can't keep my eyes open anymore.
I was really hoping to get it up and going tonight. I'll have to call it a night and try to figure it out tomorrow.
Thanks for all your help!
