Problems with conversion

I recently bought a second generation 10GB MAC iPod and tried to convert it to a Windows version using the Windows 1.2.6 iPod updater. The restore was not successful as I got error messages such as "firmware update failure; disk write error" and "can't lock iPod. Please check if any other applications are using iPod and try again". Now when I turn the iPod on I get the folder with the exclamation mark. Reset doesn't do anything. I tried to do a reformat but it was not successful. I am using the firewire port on an ATI AIW 8500DV video card. Not sure if this card can be used with the iPod. Any assistance and/or advice would be much appreciated.

Chances are it's the card. Whenever you see disk write errors it means that the card is having problems writing to the iPod drive.

You can test it yourself. Connect the iPod, then grab about 100MB worth of mp3s. Copy them to the root of the iPod drive in My Computer. Windows will probably hit an error. If that's the case it means that you've got a firewire card that's not compatible w/the iPod.

Many other types work, such as:

Adaptec 4300 (the cadillac of cards),
Orangelink from Orangemicro
Belkin (not from Apple)
Any cheap VIA chipset card usually works

Windows won't allow the mp3 files to be copied to the iPod because the iPod's drive is not formatted. iPod cannot be formatted using current configuration with the video card. Will look for a different firewire card. Thanks for your help.
