oh i dont know what ive done!

hi all
i have a problem, here it is
i copied a cd onto my computer using windows media and these files were .wma files so i renamed them to .mp3 files, opened music match and added the tunes to my ipod (3rd gen 15gb) however when i came to listen to these tunes nothing happend, no sound, on the display of the ipod it was just scrolling through the tracks. this doesnt happen when i add tunes i have d/l from the net
what am i doing wrong?
also is there any way of setting what format (eg .mp3 .wav etc) the songs come onto my computer as so i dont have to rename them all the time?
any help will be appreciated.
cheers

Instead of renaming the WMA files, I think you better convert them to MP3s.

mp3s and wma are different types of files that use different compression algorythms. You need to find a program that can do it, I don't know one off hand but you will probably lose quality in the files, because the file is already compressed so when you convert them they will have to be uncompressed then recompressed again so they probably won't sound very good. Files you download off the internet are probably mp3s, that is why they work. you would be better to re rip the songs as mp3s from the CD.

Since you have MMJB (music match) you can just rip the tunes in it. It converts CDs to mp3. Microsoft (typical) decided it would be better off if they came up with their very own format. So Windows Media Player only encodes into .wma. You can buy a plugin that will convert to .mp3 (it's like $10).

But why bother.

I don't recommend ripping in MMJB because the quality isn't that great, but you can worry about that later once you have your iPod full and you get some more experience under your belt w/mp3s. For now, just have fun.
