Sound Quality

I have the 10GB new iPod and I must say that I am disappointed by the sound quality. The bass sounds like it's connected to a cheap subwoofer that shakes horribly and when the treble gets high/loud the sound comes out scratchy. My mp3's are 192 bit rate. Is anybody else having this problem? The sound comes out like this no matter what kind of headphones I use and the mp3's sound fine on my PDA and desktop.

HELP!

Mine sounds fine.

What kind of headphones are you using?

I'm using the MDR-EX70LP headphones. Maybe the unit is defective?

Maybe it's the earbuds.

Those buds are famous for their bass, especially if they're not burned in yet.
You could try the tape mod (basically just cover one or two of the three holes in each ear piece to tame the bass a bit).

If I were you, I'd try the iPod with a different set of headphones/earbuds first.

I used the headphones that were included with the iPod and I had the same problem. The mp3's sound great on my PDA with the Sony headphones, but with the iPod it's horrible. So I don't think it's a problem with the headphones. Anybody else have any suggestions?

Ack! I'm fairly sure you have a defective iPod, since the same MP3 tracks sound great through the PDA with the same headphones. The iPod is purpose-built for MP3 playback, so the sound ought to be better than on the PDA, really.

If that's not the case, you should try listening to another iPod to compare with your own. If they're the same, I'd be surprised! If the two iPods sound different, you need a replacement from your supplier.

i kinda noticed that too with my original earphone. it varied with different songs thou. so, i adjust/preset the EQ differently for different songs (even on the same album). it is now ok, but i'm expecting for my new ex71's. hopefully, it will even sound better.

You're not using the EQ, right? If you are, turn it off and make sure that it's not that messing things up before you go return the unit.

I bought the 15GB iPod and noticed that the bass had a very choppy sound to it. When I played the same mp3 on my old Nomad, the song sounded fine. I took my iPod to the Apple Store and they played the same song on my iPod and a demo model in the store and the difference in quality was obvious. They exchanged my iPod with a new one as they determined mine was defective. I got the new one home, set it up, and it sounds 100% better. The strange thing was that on the defective iPod only lower frequencies sounded off, the mid's and high's sounded fine.

turn off SOUND CHECK and EQUALIZER and see how that works. I leave those off and sound is good, but some songs/albums may need a different setting. after going to cirque du soleil my hearing isn't so good anymore :(

I have eq turned off on both my powerbook and the ipod and played the same sound. The iPod's high end detail was really dissapointing. The powerbook sounded better and it was a G3 pb at that. Someone try the same test. Use a piece you're familiar with that has lots of high hat cymbals and good bass detail. I found the iPod to be lacking. Dissapointed since I thought the iPod was gonna be better.
