Reinstalling 2.0 software
In a purely hypothetical situation.. (honest  ) If a new (with the dock port) iPod (10Gb version, if it matters) has it's hard disk formatted.. how is it possible to reinstall the software?
According to the user manual i "...may need to restore iPod's software. To download the iPod Software Updater Application, go to www.apple.com/ipod" So i went there.. but the only reference to the Software Updater Application i could find is the 1.3 Update, but "iPod Software Update 1.3 is only compatible with touch-wheel and scroll-wheel iPods without a dock connector."
So, anyone have any ideas to save me? Please, i really love my iPod. :(

I'm new to iPod, but have just been posting in another thread - someone there c.c.r, I think, said that the install disk does all of this for you, so I'd suggest running the install software again. might be completely wrong but it cant hurt!

..it WOULD work... if i had anything other than windoze 98 SE. :(
I've just downloaded XPlay.. as it seems to have a "restore iPod" function which seems to do exactly what i want (and it works under Win98SE). However the version i downloaded (the latest release, although there is a pre-release that i might try..) Isn't too keen to restore any software other than version 1.3. It connects to a server somewhere, downloads that version of the software, tries to install it then pops up an error message that a "specified file cannot be found". I assume that this is caused by trying to install the software on the wrong model of iPod..
..any further help would be great. (btw i'm VERY impressed with the speed of these replies! :) )

With the iPod manager software that comes with a 2.0 iPod, there's a button to launch the 2.0 updater, which gives you the option to restore your docking iPod. It wipes the HD and then reinstalls everything.
It's pretty efficent. I've done it so many times I can't count.

Good idea.. but i can't access the iPod manager. The software CD that comes with the iPod doesn't run on Win98SE (which i have), so i can't install the iPod manager.. :(
Okay guys, keep up the ideas. :)

go to a friends place (who has win xp) and do the whole thing there. i would have told you to run the 1.2.6 firmware updater, but i don?t know if it works with the new ipods. if you want to try here (http://ipodlounge.com/downloads_windows.php?id=0) is a link to the updater. do so at your own risk. the firmware updater says it?s only for win2000, me and xp, but i ran it without any problems on my old ipod. i did this at my own risk.

I finally found a friend with XP, AND a firewire card.
I ran the manager thing as you said, and it's all fixed up now :D
Thanks to everyone who helped (as for those that didn't help... :p ) I'm now using EphPod to upload my music from my win98 machine, and it's all good. :)
