Interesting point about transfer speeds
I had a new 10gb ipod and was getting about 4mbytes per second. The my dad got a 15gb and VERY nicely swapped with me since he was only after the accessories. And when i plugged the new 15gb ipod in, my transfer speeds have increased to between 4.5 and 5
So there is a definate difference there. Also these speeds are measured from ephPod with a large 7gb chunk of songs. So they are a good average.

Hmmmm! Very interesting... It suggests that the iPod's hard drive was a rate-limiting factor in your setup - so, it wasn't just your system causing the slow rate. Since your rate is still slow, if you're really after faster performance you could try swapping in a different Firewire card... Probably not worth the bother though. :)

The data transfer rates also depend on the quality of the code written for performing the data transfer. I currently get 7-8Mb/s when using Media Center 9 to transfer files to my iPod. This increased from an original rate of 5-6Mb/s when SteveG, the developer of the MC9 iPod plugin made an improvement to his code to transfer data.
I'm using a 10Gb touchwheel iPod, not one of the new ones.

Yes, the point about the actual code written to the ipod is a also a factor. In ephpod, just for a laugh, I set it to use the Windows API to transfer the songs. I got about 3.2mb/s what was slower again than my 4mb/s.

you can only upload as fast as the ipod will write to its hard drive. I am not sure how fast this is, but if i am right firewire uploads at 20mb/s. Most people max out at 5-7 mb when uploading. 5 is probably a good transfer with 7 being maxed out. If someone gives me the address to the hard drives manufacutres web site i can work it out.

my new ipod just arrived an hour ago and I started loading in the tunes but I was only getting 2MB/s, this is through the firewire cable with the 6-4pin converter attached.
The battery ran out so it could be that the battery was too low, I'll try again once it is properly charged, still sounds a bit low though.
any thoughts?

A low battery will not effect transfer speeds--until it runs out that is. ;) Your firewire card will however, also what program you're using to upload. MMJB is the slowest by far...

my laptop has a built in 4pin firewire port and I was using ephpod

If you're using Windows XP, one thing to try is to go to:
Safely Remove Hardware (system tray) -> Highlight iPod, click "Properties" -> Select the "Policies" tab -> Select "Optimize for Performance" -> Click OK.
At least on my end, "Optimize for Quick Disconnect" was selected instead of the performance option. When I set it to the "performance" option, I noticed I gained an extra 1MB/second on my transfer rate.
I'm getting 6-7MB/second using Ephpod 2.7 and Windows XP Pro.
Also, I'm not 100% sure about this, but there is no speed difference between the 4- and 6-pin Firewire connectors, only that the extra two pins in the 6-pin connector are for power only. That's what I've heard, but I don't know for sure.

Does it really matter? I don't care if it takes 20 % longer time.
