All of a sudden...

I can't transfer the 3,421 MP3's that I ripped from CD's I OWN to my laptop from my desktop!

Does anyone know if any of the iPod software is preventing this? The error message I get is "Access is denied." Neither computer's hard drive is even CLOSE to being full, and the file folder with my music in it is being shared on my home network. The iPod's software isn't running, so the files aren't in use (that I can tell).

Any ideas?? I really hope that it's not some sort of copy-protection that's been placed onto the files that I've ripped from CD's that I've purchased with my own money. That's really gonna get me iTicked if that's the case.

Thanks.

No, there's no copy protection involved. It must have something to do w/how your PCs are networked.

Can you copy any files from the directory that has your music to on your desktop to you laptop? There has to be some setting your missing in windows.

The My Music folder resides in the My Documents folder. I can copy everything out of every other sub-folder in My Documents. But when I try and copy from the My Music folder it gives me that error message.

I checked the individual folder's settings and they're no different from any of the other folders.

Incidentally, I was able to copy from the desktop to the laptop after I initially ripped all my CDs (I was anticipating the arrival of the iPod) and had no problems. That was prior to installing any iPod related software. I need to do it again as my laptop recently had to be reformatted and I lost all the data I had on it.

Well that error would mean the files u r currently trying to transfer r currently in use.. make sure nothing is running that may affect that music.. ALSO!! highlight the folder and right click, drag down to properties and click. Go to the "Sharing" tab and make sure u have that folder shared. once it is shared u should have absolutely no problem transferring..

As near as I can tell (as I said in the orignal post) there is nothing running that would be using the Mp3's I want to transfer. The folder is also being shared, as I can see it when I open My Network Places on my laptop while it's connected to the network.

MMJBox isn't running. Nor is WinAmp. Nor is the iPod Manager. Yet, I still get that error message.

Is there something I can change by looking the in the "Processes" section of the Windows Task Manager (CTRL- ALT -DELETE)? I've already ended the processes that have to do with the portions of the iPod software that are TSR.

Umm, go ahead and try moving the folder, it'd work better if the driver were partitioned, but i have experianced trouble when getting stuff off of the C: drive in the past.. Also make sure u r COPYING and not cutting b/c u may not have write access on the disk. And go through and check the sharing options..

Tried copying/pasting from desktop to laptop via Network Places. No luck. Same error message (make sure the file isn't in use or the disk isn't write-protected/full). It isn't write-protected, and it's not even 1/4 full (42.5GB free space on a 60GB HDD). Both the laptop and the desktop hard drives are formatted NTFS (not that I'm sure it'd make a difference if one were FAT32). The music folder is shared on the desktop.

Does anyone know WTF is really going on? I don't mean to sound ungrateful for the help that's been offered me here so far...but this is really starting to eat at me. I'm not exactly a computer n00b, either. This is a problem I can't seem to find an answer to.

Just had a thought...do you have Window Media Player Series 9 installed? That has a "Watch Folders" option. If your My Music folder is set up as the watch folder, it means it's being accessed by WMP9. Try turning off this feature in WMP9.

Not sure if that's it, but it's worth a try.

Good thought, it may be in ur network setup, make sure u set up both comps right, they need to be under the option thats like "This computer connects to a routeer or bridge and then to the internet" just play w/ it for awhile.. and restart both comps then go into my network places and hit refresh.. i dunno man i need some specifics on the setup u have..

Is it possible that the ripping software that you used has a copy protection option that unfortunately you may have ticked by mistake? I can't say this has ever happened to me but isn't it possible when you rip a CD to give that file copy protection?

Doesn't .WMA do this to only allow the files to be used on the computer of origin?

Just throwing out ideas here that might jog someone's memory.

Few more ideas, Instead of dragging the entire folder, try dragging individual .mp3s instead. Right click on the folder and make sure that Read Onluy isn't ticked and make sure if you untick it that it applies to all files and subdirectories.

If all this has failed try dragging the folder to another place before trying to copy to the other computer. So drag from My Directory onto the desktop and then onto the other comp.

Nope...WMP Series 8 is instaleld. Only use it for mpeg video.

Copying single files instead of the entire My Music folder doesn't work either.

The ripping software I use is Jack the MP3 Ripper. Not the best, but not the worst, either. This doesn't put any copy protection code into the MP3, as I've done before exactly what I'm trying to do now (transfer my ripped MP3 to my laptop from my desktop).

Router...Hmmm...I never had a problem with it before, but I'll check on that. The reason I DON'T think it's the router is that I have no problem sending other files from my desktop to the laptop through the router.

I really think it's a folder issue...but there's nothing checked in the folder properties that would MAKE it a folder issue.

<sigh>

Okay. I copied the folder that contained ALL my MP3s, then I gave it a different name. Then, I designated it as a shared folder on my network. The laptop computer found the new folder on the network, no-problem, so I copied/pasted the folder to the laptop computer and...

IT WORKS!!!! The files are being transferred as I type. It's going to take a while (14GB at whatever speed my network is transferring the data).

I think renaming to folder to something that isn't looked for by iPod software is what did the trick.

Anyway...thanks for trying to help me out, everyone!
