Changing from Mac to Win with XP

Hello there all.

First of all - I've been all over the web trying to fix this problem (which I'll explain in a moment). I've spent hours messing with this problem - so any help would be really, really appreciated.

The problem is this:

I have a Mac, 5gig iPod that I want to make work on my Win XP machine (with built-in firewire). So, I went to the Apple site, followed the instructions and downloaded the new 1.2.6 Updater, which apparently is supposed to allow me to reformat this iPod to Fat32. Well - no matter what I do (uninstalling/reinstalling/restarting/changing program file names), my computer will not see the iPod.
Has anyone else ever heard/seen this problem? All I can figure out now is that perhaps this cord is bad? That's usually the first thing I tell people when I try to help them with their computers (I was a tech in the past), so I'm going to see what happens when I get a new cord - but short of a bad cord.....

Any thoughts?

J.

sounds like firewire card trouble. I would try a different card. Some cards work well with the ipod some don't.

No, the firewire is installed on this laptop, and it works just fine with other hardware.

I'm going to get another cord tomorrow - maybe that's it. It sure is annoying though.

Thanks for the imput. The answer is out there somewhere - I just wish that it was not this ridiculously problematic. Oh well.

Thanks again.

Just because it works with other hardware does not necessarily mean that it does with your ipod. It could be the cord, but my bet is the card.

Fonafona:

I am having the same problem. Did you work out a solution. I returned my pc card (a SIIG) but have not yet picked up another.
