adaptec firewire card

Well, here's my very first post to this forum. Please go easy on me. I just got an ipod 30 GB and an Adaptec AFW-1430 FireWire card for my Dell laptop. I noticed that the card has an area on it to plug in a power adaptor. Do I need to buy that in order to charge my ipod through the FireWire card? Or will the ipod charge once I plug it into the card?

Thanks for any help.

I can't speak for the Adaptec card but I had to buy one for my Belkin. I bought a generic multi voltage adaptor that 1250Ma @ 12volts.

Good luck,

No external power needed. Note that some recommend you try to simply recharge directly thru the AC adapter as your iPod disk drive is spinning when it's connected to the FireWire and charging, so you'll minimize HD wear & tear. When you're connected straight thru the AC adapter, no disk spin.

The only nice thing about having Power through the Firewire is that then you don't have to worry about the battery draining when you're moving a lot of tracks to the IPOD...I learned the hardway and had to completely reset mine. Also, if you dismount the IPOD but leave it plugged in it'll shut down the HD.

Most cards get their power directly from the PCI slot, there isn't an external power connector.

It'll charge your iPod.

Aqualung: You can unmount your iPod (assuming you have a gen3) and leave it in the dock and it will charge w/o the HDD spinning.

Thanks for the help. Two more questions:

1. How do I dismount the ipod to prevent the ipod from spinning while charging? Is this done by ejecting the ipod when in Music Match?

2. Yesterday I was going to use the card for the first time to sync all my music to my ipod 30 gb. Anyway, once I docked the ipod it indicated that it was out of power. Why didn't the FireWire card automatically start charging it once I seated the ipod in the cradle?

This rookie thanks everyone for all your help.

If you have a laptop, the firewire cardbus that uses in the pcmcia slot is not powered. PCMCIA does not supply power. That is why you need to plug in the power adapter to the card.

On the other hand, all PCI firewire cards are powered, so if you have a card that you insert into a PCI slot in your desktop pc, it will be powered.

You can tell if the iPod is charging when you connect it to your laptop firewire card via the dock, it will show the battery charging symbol.

The only time you really need a powered card, is when you are transferring a large amount of music. If that is case and you are cheap like me, just transfer 1 to 2 gbs at a time and then recharge the thing.

>>In your system tray should be an icon w/ a green arrow, "Unplug or Eject Hardware". Right mouse click on this and follow the instructions to "stop" your iPod.

>>I've read in other threads that many PC Card F/W implementations don't support the power aspect of 1394 -- revolves around not wanting to drain the battery, but (il)logically it doesn't allow it when you're plugged in and aren't worried about the battery life.

This rookie thanks everyone for all your help.
