Big Deal!!! Still no AAC, so who cares, but the Audible people will be happy. I'll stick with the hacked version.

# 3 Re: Windows 1.3 Is Out!
Cool!
The hacked 1.3 allows AAC. Does the official version support AAC?
EDIT: Bill, are you saying no AAC because the web page says no AAC, or have you tried playing an AAC file with the new firmware?
# 4 Re: Windows 1.3 Is Out!
they changed the main menu on the ipod.
now says only:
playlists->
browse->
extras->
settings->
backlight
i think about was always there before or something else - it filled up the whole display before but now there's one blank line @ the bottom. note: about is now found under "settings"...there's a backlight timer (was that there b4?)...you can switch the backlight on/off manually by selecting it on the main menu...my clock was reset to 1200AM and July 23rd...only diffs I've found so far.

# 5 Re: Windows 1.3 Is Out!
I'm saying no AAC because the web site says, "including playback of AAC encoded audio files (Mac-only). " Why would I bother to install the authorized Apple firmware just so I can lose AAC, since my iPod works fine, and has all of the changes that everyone will start mentioning.
Oh, and since iTunes for Windows isn't out, then I would assume that there would be no reason to give Windows users AAC. Just my guess.

Umm.. how do I know what version I have?
Is this different from the 2.0.1 firmware update?

Squibbles - this is only for 1st & 2nd gen older ipods - not the new model. notice 1.3 is lower than 2.0.1 :)

Question on 1.3 for Windows...
I installed the hacked version. Should I (can I) install the new 1.3? Advantages/disadvantages?
Thanks!!!

# 10 Re: Windows 1.3 Is Out!
Just a quess, but I don't think there is any advantage to going to the new firmware. I'm getting 12 or 12 1/2 hours playback time on my scrollwheel iPod with the hacked version, and I can't imagine that it's going to increase it that much, and I'm pretty sure that all of the other changes are in the hacked version, so why change it. Anyway if it ain't broke don't fix it, and my pod is working just fine.

# 11 Re: Windows 1.3 Is Out!
I recently downloaded the new update off the official Apple website.
http://a1408.g.akamai.net/7/1408/1388/20030724/akamai.info.apple.com/iPod/ww/win/061-0578.20030724.frcdw/setup.exe
According to Apple the following was addressed/fixed:
Software 1.3 adds support for Audible.com content. Additional enhancements include audio playback and user interface improvements, increased playback time on scroll-wheel iPods, and longer stand-by time for all iPods.
It installs the software which consists of an updater and restore program which is pretty regular among the iPod updates. I simply plugged iPod in. Ran the update, which took about 15 seconds. Unplugged the iPod when is was the appropriate time. Plugged the iPod back in accordingly. The iPod showed a little progress bar which inched forward, took about 20 seconds. Once done, I closed down the update software, unmounted iPod and checked what was new.
A Backlight option was added to the root menu, which enables users to turn it on or off. The About section was also moved into Settings. As far as battery enhancement and audio playback improvement is concerned, I have yet to discover; installed only 15 minutes ago.
My specs were as follows:
Windows 2000 Professional on SP-4.
10 Gb WiPod, 2nd Gen, Touch-Wheel.
Hope this was to some use :)
Have a good one Windows users, you deserve it!
# 12 Re: Windows 1.3 Is Out!
Legit software is always better than 'hacked' or 'pirated' software. I installed it myself, but then again im not too interested in AAC, since its no good anyways.
# 13 Re: Windows 1.3 Is Out!
Depends on what you are will to do to use AAC. Sveta works fairly well, and there is always the manual method to update the DB, so AAC isn't worthless.
Oh, and hacked isn't always bad. My iPod has been running for quite awhile with no problems whatsoever, so why change. I could understand if you were having problems, but my iPod never stops working.
So, no, legit isn't always better, especially if it's the same. The only thing that I can't verify that the hacked version does is Audible, because I don't use Audible.
Bill McNair
# 14 Re: Windows 1.3 Is Out!
Thanks for your post about the 1.3 update. Actually I'm pretty excited to (finally) get Audible.com support, just for the npr content. :)
Quick question: when you updated the software, it didn't clear off the iPod of all songs, did it? You mentioned the inclusion of the 'Restore' feature... so I want to make sure we don't have to re-load all our songs, not that that's a major inconvenience or anything. :)
# 15 Re: Windows 1.3 Is Out!
I just discovered that they FINALLY put the update up! So I haven't downloaded or installed it yet. However, I'll do that later today, and I'll be glad to share the experience then.
As far I understand, installing the update is supposed to wipe the Winpod clean of all songs (and whatever else is on there). In fact, I'm sort of counting on that, as there are a few corrupt files on my Pod that I otherwise can't get rid of. But again, I haven't installed yet, so I can't be sure.
# 16 Re: Windows 1.3 Is Out!
I just got a new 5gb iPod with a 1.0.something version firmware and I tried to update it with the 1.3 firmware. Unfortunately I got a "firmware not compatible with hardware" error. I uninstalled 1.3 and installed 1.2.6 and fortunately that worked. So it seems 1.3 can not update really old firmwares.
# 17 Re: Windows 1.3 Is Out!
I also just updated my 20gb pod. No problems whatsoever. I went from Firmware 1.2.6 to this, new, 1.3. The install was seamless. And, to answer the restore question - NO. You don't have to restore your pod to update the firmware. All the music is right where you left it, operating under the new firmware. That's my experience. And, also, let me say, Apple really suprised me with this...I thought for sure I was never going to see a firmware update again. Thank you Apple. Hopefully this is a hint of things to come in the future. (even though it was, what, 3 months later?)

# 18 Re: Windows 1.3 Is Out!
Update as indicated does not wipe any songs off the iPod. It simply updates the firmware on the machine itself. Restore will remove everything.
RSharpe: Now update from 1.2.6 to 1.3 :) That should work perfect.
# 19 Re: Windows 1.3 Is Out!
Interesting...
Ive ripped a few albums in AAC just to try the compression scehem out. Its alright, but its not good enough to re-encode all my music.

I've a 5 GB (first generation, one of the first sold in Italy). Originally it was HTFS+ (MAC) formatted update to 1.3. A month ago I switched :-) it to Windows, to the 1.2.6. Now I upgraded to 1.3 without any problem. I think the old firm should not create update problem.

No, you don't have to restore before you update your firmware.
I'd also like to add, that ALL of my MP4s (m4a, m4p) now play on the new 1.3 firmware for windows. I though I'd throw that out there. Yes, its the legal version from apple's site.

Biggest difference: Legit version was made by Apple. Hacked version was made by "some guy".
No disrespect to "some guy" mind you, and I'm glad he's out there. Still. Use the legit version.

# 26 Re: Windows 1.3 Is Out!
OK, I've just completed the restore on my 5G iPod to v1.3. I intentionally restored it to wipe it clean, because I had some corrupted files I wanted to get rid of cleanly, plus I've been wanting to re-code my mp3s. The main visual difference is the Backlight item on the main menu, and the sample stuff under the Contacts tab.
But: WHERE are the two extra games that v1.3 is supposed to have??
The Mac version of 1.3 adds in Parachute and Solitaire, in addition to the standard Breakout. It doesn't look like the Winpods get the extra games?
I'm deeply disappointed. Yes, I know the iPod isn't primarily a game machine, but still, I would have liked to have the extras. I play a game of Breakout at least once or twice a day, just to kill time while waiting. It'd be nice to have a couple of other options!
(I don't know if this should go under a new topic or not...)
# 27 Re: Windows 1.3 Is Out!
To my knowledge, 1.3 was not supposed to include more games anyway. Audible support, backlight on the root menu, and some other miscellaneous things. At least, that's what's advertised. Again, I'll say that all my MP4s work in 1.3 (even though the apple website says otherwise).

I do like to have some extra games though. :D

And I'm pretty sure the Mac version of 1.3 did have the extra games as part of the upgrade. Does anyone here have an older MacPod with v.1.3?

I don't know if anyone picked up this bug but:
The backlight timer dosn't work anymore, i don't know why but once u turn your backlight, it completely ignors the timer you set and stays on for well, forever.

Nope, 1.3 does the same in both versions...
The extra games, otg playlists etc etc are only available to 3rd gen ipod users (with the dock)

There is no bug, the backlight timer works perfectly fine (at least on my ipod).
# 38 Re: Windows 1.3 Is Out!
I used Ephpod to transfer the AACs. Ephpod can handle .mp3, .aa, .wav, .m4a, .m4p
I'm not familiar with Xplay, but try it out for yourself. You may be pleasantly suprised:)

Can I have both 2.01 and 1.3 on my PC at the same time or will the 1.3 setup overwrite the 2.01?

I removed my Limit file while using version 1.2.6 to resolve the European volume cap problem and have just upgraded to 1.3. After checking in the Ipod folder, I see there is no restored Limit file - so I believe you won?t need to do it again after upgrading.
# 41 Re: Windows 1.3 Is Out!
What is the new backlight function actually meant to do?
In settings I still have the off, time period and always on options and the backlight operates whenever any button is pressed. The new backlight just sits there with no options and no obvious purpose. Anyone enlighten me ( no pun intended )
Thanks

# 43 Re: Windows 1.3 Is Out!
The backlight option on the root menu is simply an on/off switch. It's meant for easy access in the dark until you can change the backlight timer, or if you just briefly want to check something, without changing the backlight timer.

Thats whats confusing as the backlight will come on when I touch any button or the scrollwheel anyway. Maybe mine did not install properly but it seems to be superfluous feature.
# 45 Re: Windows 1.3 Is Out!
I have a gen2 20GB iPod and was on 1.2.6 for awhlie. There had been a problem with a Available/Capcity reading on the About screen. Even though I had put about 10GB of mp3s on my iPod, it still read 18.5GB.
After recently restoring my iPod and updating to 1.3, I uploaded quite a few songs and the Available reading changed to show the correct available space!!! :D That was the only small problem I was having with my iPod since I got it.
Thanks Apple... for what it's worth :)
# 46 Re: Windows 1.3 Is Out!
I have the hacked 1.3 firmware on my 20 Gb IPOD.
How do I flash it to the official 1.3 version? The update button is greyed out, presumably because it thinks I already have v1.3 installed! I tried loading 1.2.6 and that won't work either since it thinks I'm trying to go back to an earlier release and the button is greyed out too.
Will restore do the trick? ( I hate to use restore as it wipes out 20 gb worth of data )
# 47 Re: Windows 1.3 Is Out!
Hey guys, I recently bought an iPod off my brother (10 gig 2nd gen, he updated to a new 15 gig), and I'm really pleased with it.
Well, I just downloaded the 1.3 update, and call me computer illiterate, but I installed it to a specific folder, and now I can't see the installed files, only the setup.exe that's about 12 megs. I restarted my computer after the installation, but I still can't see any of the files. Anyone have an idea of what's going on, or where the files might be "hiding"? Also, I'm using EphPod, and I click on "Update iPod firmware." It says "The iPod updater will attempt to find the iPod attatched to this computer. Make sure you have the iPod connected to your computer." I select OK, and then it just leaves a blank screen, even though my iPod is connected. Thanks for any help.

I do have this problem, but I never upgraded to v1.3. I am still using v1.2 and have a 5gb scroll wheel iPod. One day, the backlight timer just quit working. I can set it to any of the settings (1, 2, 5, or 10 seconds) and the backlight just stays on forever. Is this a defect? Should I send it back to apple and get some use out of my 2 year warranty? Or is there a way for me to fix this problem?

# 54 Re: Windows 1.3 Is Out!
Everything worked just fine with my upgrade. The backlight timer works perfectly and the menu items all moved to where they were supposed to. The only thing that didn't change is the fact that my available capacity on the About screen is still frozen at 8.7 gigs. This is totally no big deal but I thought it might read accurately now that a few others have posted that theirs did after the 1.3 upgrade.
I have transfered a few songs since the upgrade as well.

Hi Adam,
Are there any installation tricks I have to be awaire of?
The 1.3 ipod mounting app doesn't seem to recognize my 2.0.1 ipod right now so it seems I need to install the 2.0.1.
Do I just add 2.0.1 to my PC, and will 1.3 still just work in the background?
Thanks,

# 56 Re: Windows 1.3 Is Out!
Henk:
Well, the 1.3 updater shouldn't recognize your 2.0.1 iPod. The 2.0.1 firmware is for gen 3 iPods. 1.3 is for gen 1 and 2 iPods.
Not sure what kind of iPod you have. If you have both, the updaters should work fine. But they are only going to work on the appropriate iPod (i.e. 1.3 on 1st and 2nd gen iPods, 2.0.1 on 3rd gen iPods)
