Windows and MP4
Can windows iPods play MP4, AAC, or OGG? I've heard yes and no from lots of different people, I was looking for a definitive answer. Thanks.

I'll be happy to give you a definitive answer: No.
iPod supports .wav, .mp3, and .aiff only, with the recent addition of Audible files, as well.
Some folks have "kludged" their way into being able to play .aac on a WinniePod. I haven't, and so can't tell you much about it. But the official line is "no".

Yes, you can play AAC files, on Windows iPods, but not legally.

If you rename the mp4 file a m4a file, EphPod will transfer them to your iPod without a problem (I've got over 3200 songs in AAC on my iPOd).

Yeah, but you can't play them on a Windows iPod without the illegal version of the firmware.

Well, that's no good. If there's a LEGAL way to do this, I'd be more than happy to try. But until then, I guess I see nothing wrong with MP3.

I have several albums ripped on a MAC that are in m4a format that work & play on my G3 30GB Ipod. I wasn't aware that it was illegal or didn't work.
What's up with that?
Where do you find the "hacked" version of Ipod software?

BigIzz,
Have you tried the legit WinniePod 1.3 firmware (http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/ipodsoftwareupdate13.html) with your AAC files yet?
If it works, I'm sure lots of folks here would appreciate your wisdom on how to cook up their own AAC files, get 'em managed and tagged, and load 'em onto their iPods.

# 9 Re: Windows and MP4
mp3, mp3VBR, wav, aiff, aa, aac (mp4)
i think that is all the formats a docking pod can use.
However you can proberly add other formats if you install linux on it ;)

Bill, I dont think it is illegal to play 'em on a dockingpod, and as Kurt said the windows 1.3 supports AAC (i think :hmm:)

Bill,
they work perfectly with the windows 1.3 firmware on my 2nd gen ipod.
it's quite a treat
cheers
1. They are produced with easy cd-da extractor as 160kbit mp4 files
2. they are renamed in the command prompt from *.mp4 to *.m4a
3. imported into ephpod (welcomes the m4a format)
4. the files will be named as I have chosen in easy cd-da as track number - title. Ephpod can be used to input the artist and album name.
This will import as any mp3 normally would except for the little renaming hitch. On your ipod will scroll the song title ... with the .m4a extension.
cheers
