Problem with japanese and chinese tracks
It seems that each time i used musicmatch to rip the songs to mp3 format...windows and music match displays them correctly initially and mmjb even plays the songs properly!
however when i try to record it over to the iPod using both mmjb or Ephpod...the songs will NOT be ported over and the program will give an error! Some I/O error thing...i tried checking the tags and the tags somehow become ?...which is very odd!and winamp REFUSES to play the tracks!simply putting them as ?
i'm terribly frustrated with it now..i know that the iPod can support chinese and japanese characters.how do i over come this?

I wish I knew for sure on how to fix this but some things seem to work for some people, and not for others, so I will give you a few suggestions.
First off I use Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters, so my experience is in getting these to work, and I only use ephPOD and XPlay so I'm not sure if these suggestions will work on MMJB.
I will assume you've installed the characters you need.
1. Make sure all of the file names are in English. Some programs, namely XPlay, will transfer CJK named files over, but ephPOD won't, and I would assume MMJB won't.
2. If you still can't get the files over after changing the file names then you may have to change the regional settings in your computer. You do this in Control Panel > Regional Settings. You can change it to China or Japan.
BTW I tag all of the English information with ID3-Taggit, and the CJK information with Windows Media Player. Seems to work the best, most of the time.
I suspect that the file names are what is causing the problem and the ? always appears for me in some programs, I think, because the regional setting are set for a western country.
Oh, and please don't be frustrated. I and many others have been dealing with this for over a year, and the foreign character support you have is better than it once was. We've had to put up with track titles like ?, or ^>#8~^ and Track 01 for a very long time.

greetings, I just got my ipod recently and have had similar problems. I noticed that a lot of sites basically say you must use UNICODE, unfortunately, a lot of DL music is big5 or gb. I've tried to convert tags to display chinese artists/song/albaum using njstar communicator but have had no success, do you have any recommendations?
I keep the file name in english since thas just easier for file transfer.

Over my experience, I have noticed somethin. First off most of my music is korean...when i was running windows ME i had a terrible experience and i used NJstar communicator...it just doens't work...you dunno how bad i wanted to beat down that computer...but finally i switched back to my home computer with XP and (installed Asian Language pack)...and now everything seems to be running very smoothly. If you dunno what XP asian language pack does...to make it simple...it enables CJK fonts to show on non-unicode programs...btw just to add on...MMJB does support CJK since i use it for my iPod. If you use a seperate program such as Asian Suite or Njstar, then i'm not sure if it will work. My experience with those programs basically slapped me in the face and said it wouldn't work so... :P

When I got that I/O error business in Ephpod, I just changed the file names using ID3-TagIt to Track 1, Track 2... (the ID3 tags were intact), and they transferred perfectly and displayed the Japanese text correctly.

Hello,
I just bought a 20GB iPOD. I used MMJB to transfer some of my songs to the iPOD. The songs all have chinese song name. I have to use NJStar to see the characters in MMJB. However, it doesn't show in iPOD. I just see a bunch of funny characters in iPOD. Can anyone help? I read the previous posting in this forum and I have installed the Asian Language Support in WinXP Pro. But it still doesn't show in MMJB. The chinese is encoded in Big5 or GB. Not unicode. But I thought iPOD does support Big5 and GB. Please help. Thanks!
