What do you think it is?

Hands down media center 9 IMHO. Fastest synching program, fantastic ripper/encoder/burner, sophisticated playlist creation...Just my 2 cents..

But is there a way to get MC9 to rip in mp3 format?

# 3 Re: Best all-around iPod Windows Program?
Of course you can get MC 9 to rip into mp3 format, but why would you want to? I'm sure Adam will be handling this part of the question as soon as he reads it.
Anyway, Chris is right, MC9 is really the only all in one for the iPod. All the others are way way in the back, but even if I owned MC9 I would still use EAC to rip.

# 4 Re: Best all-around iPod Windows Program?
MC9 allows you to rip in digital secure, similar (not identical) to EAC. I've actually had discs I could not rip with EAC rip just fine with MC9, and in all honesty I've yet to have a problem ripping with MC9.
EAC is great, but if you want an all in one application that is so close as to be indistinguishable IMHO from EAC, then MC9 is it. I have spent a ton of time working with rippers and encoders (ask Adam if you don't believe me), and I think the potential trade off in quality going from EAC's ripper to MC9's ripper is so minimal, that it makes more sense from a convienance standpoint to rip using MC9. MC9 uses a LAME encoder, which is much better at higher bit rates then the mmjb fraunhofer encoder...
So if you're looking for an easy way to rip/encode at high quality, MC9 is great.

Ephpod. Period. MC 9 is good and all, but can you add contacts with it. NO.
# 6 Re: Best all-around iPod Windows Program?
Sorry, I've yet to add a contact, play a game or enter a calandar event on the 3 iPods I've had.
I think if you need the ipod for that, get a PDA. Just my 2 cents.
As far as ripping in MC9..well, Chris is the ripper expert.
Hey, Jack..er Chris, hmm, I'm beginning to wonder about you. Think about it. You're a surgeon that just happens to be one of the resident experts here on "ripping". And you picked it up very quick I might add. Hm....hang around London much? Say in the mid-19th century? Hm? Out with it man!!!

Is MC9 capable of getting tags automatically off the net?
Tekron at 2007-11-15 17:12:10 >

# 8 Re: Best all-around iPod Windows Program?
Tekron: Yes.
Adam: No comment. Er, I plead the 5th...But I'm seriously thinking of marketing my 'Fountain of Youth' concoction--it goes quite well with foccacia...

But it pulls the tags off of a JRiver server, so if you listen to popular music you should be OK, but if you listen to music that is way off of the beatin path, then you may be entering the tags yourself.

True, but it gets better every day--I had a very, very obscure title picked up and properly tagged yesterday--I almost fell out of my chair when it was recognized; I think there are only like 3 or 4 people who bought this particular CD...

But there are only a few people with music as obscure, at least in Western countries, as mine. Let see, have you heard of wyolica, Ajico, Hy or Super Junky Monkey? It may not be an issue for you, but it may for some, and I don't like typing in entries.

Actually, it seems you CAN'T add contacts with the current version of Ephpod. You can add calendar entries, but not contacts - it pops up a message that says "Contacts function is seriously out of date - try Outpod instead".

No, I haven't heard of those, and frankly, those titles slightly frighten me...:D
What database do you use that picks those up? If it's freedb, MC9 is based on freedb...
dmt1 at 2007-11-15 17:20:20 >

# 16 Re: Best all-around iPod Windows Program?
freedb, but the last time I tried MC9 they didn't show up. At this point the only thing keeping me from buying MC9 is AAC and iffy unicode support. If they they give me AAC then I'll be buying otherwise I will wait for iTunes.
Oh, and those are some fairly popular Japanese bands. Super Junky Monkey is my favorite punk band.

# 17 Re: Best all-around iPod Windows Program?
Pizzicato Five
There, another Japanese band, but it found them relatively easily.
Oh, and Fantastic Plastic Machine too, but they're basically Pop :D
Oh, and the other thing MC9 doesn't do is allow me to load new games onto the iPod. Nor does it allow me to sync my cell phone contacts, which really bums me out when I need to make a call and er, don't want to look up the numbers on my cell phone. ;)
Adam
# 18 Re: Best all-around iPod Windows Program?
LoL!
Yeah, Pizzacato Five released their CD's in the U.S. and are fairly well known, so I would expect to see them in the DB. But what about Orange Pekoe, 175r or even Rip Slyme? =P
I actually, sort of like MC9, but they've got to give me AAC before I'm going to buy it.
Actually, I bet it finds Rip Slyme.

Well, I'm pretty bummed about the game thing, I actually bought the ipod for the games, and was quite suprised that it did a fairly decent job playing mp3's, but on the other hand, I've heard firmware update 2.0.2 will not only store your cell phone contacts, but will enable you to actually use your ipod as a cell phone...

# 20 Re: Best all-around iPod Windows Program?
i dont like to pay for programs, thats just me though.
I use ephpod and to rip i use a program called freerip.
Both programs are perfect for what i need which is basically putting songs ive downloaded onto my ipod and rip my cds into mp3s and put those on my ipod...and they're bot completly free and i have yet to experience a problem with either.
MC9 costs $$ right?
# 21 Re: Best all-around iPod Windows Program?
Yes, $40.00...But worth it IMHO.
Ephpod is a fine program, but if I was going the free route, I'd use EAC/LAME as my ripper/encoder...
dmt1 at 2007-11-15 17:26:23 >

# 22 Re: Best all-around iPod Windows Program?
I don't like all in ones either, and I like free programs that work good, but MC 9 does have some nice features that you can't get anywhere else, so it is a program that is worth buying.

# 23 Re: Best all-around iPod Windows Program?
What's the difference between Media Center and Media Jukebox? Looking at their website, it seems that their core functions are the same, but Media Center comes with a few extras (e.g. DVD playback).
# 24 Re: Best all-around iPod Windows Program?
I think it's endless discussion similar what is the best car, or what is the best OS. I agree with the poster that all iPod uploaders are great programs and you won't go wrong with any.

# 25 Re: Best all-around iPod Windows Program?
You want Media Center, not Media Jukebox. It's an older version that doesn't support the iPod.
If you're interested get Media Center, not Media Jukebox.
