skipping songs

I've had my gen2 10GB iPod since they were first available for Windows, coming up on a year.
I've just started having an odd problem with certain songs: when I try to play one particular album, the iPod fast forwards through most of the album, and will only play one particular song on the album. If I try to pause it while it is fast forwarding through the other songs, the iPod freezes and I have to reset.
Similar problems have been mentioned on these boards occasionally, e.g. http://www.ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4668 . But usually, the problems have been general, not just involving one particular album.
I am using ephPod to synch the iPod with a Windows XP machine.
I've tried various suggestions I've seen on these boards, especially changing the iPod preferences to write to music directories from F00-F19, then erasing the whole iPod and loading it afresh--but nothing worked. I also examined the mp3 files in Tag & Rename, but couldn't seen anything wrong with the files that the iPod won't play.
Any further suggestions?

Is it always one album? Check the file names...they can't have any foreign characters on them (accents for example).

Or, better yet, use the option in ephpod to rename the files to random numbers. That way you'll number run into this problem.

It's under "Configure Ephpod".

Unless you've already done that.

No, there are no foreign characters in the file names.
Also I checked the files with Ashampoo MP3 Check & Convert--all the files are OK, none of them are corrupted.
And the files play OK in WinAmp on my Windows XP machine.
So I am still completely mystified.
