Quick Question from newbie regarding using an iPod as a portable HD

Basically I just want to know that will a computer (say for example the iPod is setup to work with USB2.0) be able to recognise the iPod as a portable HD (just for transferring normal files) without having to install any special drivers or software for it to be recognised.

ie: I want to be able to take files to work and plug my iPod into a USB2.0 port and upload the files, without having to install special software on somebody elses computer (which they may object to).

I have searched through many FAQ's for an answer but haven't found one, someone with a little experience in the matter would be able to answer this easily.

Thanks very much and I look foward to purchasing my new 15GB iPod very soon...

All you do is plug it in and you have an external FW/USB hard drive. You will have to buy a $18 cable if you want to use if for USB but you should be OK for firewire.

From personal experience, the gen2 iPod hooks up to Windows XP computers through firewire without any need for special drivers or software.

I wouldn't know about USB2, gen3 or any other OS, though.

Great! Thanks SouthsideIrish and Henrik. I was 95% sure it wouldn't require special software/drivers as it would sort of defeat the purpose of it being very portable. I just needed confirmation as I couldn't seem to find the information clearly anywhere.

This adds a smidge more confidence to my pending purchase, thanks.
