A few newbie questions
I've never had an ipod before and before it arrives there are a few questions I would like answers, (I'm getting the 3rd gen 10 Gb ipod):
1) What Firmware will it ship with (I've heard alo about it not having a dock so it's different from the 15 and 30GB versions) is it going to be 1.2 1.3 2.0 2.0.1 whats that all about?
2) I'm planning to use ephpod instead of the windows porgram that comes with it will that work fine with this pod?
3) I've read a bit about changing it to a windows format or using macopener, does any of this void the warenty and what would people recomend, is macopener ok?
4) I've encoded all my albums to 192bit mp3's but will the ipod recognise any genre names such as 80's pop, indie etc or does it just work with a simple set of defaults such as pop rock etc.
5) and finally do people think an update will become available which will allow it to work with mp4 (instead of m4a m4p) so i can use aac in windows, like a firmware update?
Any help with any of these would be great sorry is they've already been answered but I had a look around and couldn't find anything specific, thanks again.

1. It will be either 2.0 or 2.0.1. It will depend on when your ipod was created. Hopefully, you'll get 2.0.1, if not, it's easy to update it. 2.0.1 took care of some bugs in 2.0.
2. Yes
3. The gen3's work differently; that refers to previous gen ipods. You will have no problems running ephpod after you format the ipod for windows. Don't worry about macopener, you don't need it...
4. Yes, AAC will be available when Itunes for windows is out. You can use AAC now, but the problem is getting it on to your ipod--you need a program to do it--the gen3 ipod will accept AAC; you just need something to get it there.
4. It will recognize your genres.

5. You should be able to use AAC out of the box, but that doesn't mean that you should use it as the support for tagging is almost non-existent. AAC won't be an option until iTunes for Windows comes out, or the folks at JRiver decide to support. Oh, and ephPOD does transfer mp4's.
And don't tell me about Sveta, since the program isn't ready for primetime yet.

Of course you could just download a shareware utility that can can rename files en mass and change all the .mp4 to .m4a so EphPod can use them. I agree with the tagging issue, if you do decide to use AAC, name all the files in the same format so tagging down the road will be relativly painless.
